I got my kitty Joey from a woman off Craigslist. He is now about 9 mos old and the best kitty in the world. I love him. Right now he is sleeping at my feet, where he sleeps every single time I sit down.
When I got him, the woman asked if I could update her occasionally on how he is doing. I have written her a couple times and sent pictures. Yesterday I took a couple really adorable pictures and thought about how its been awhile since I emailed her so I sent another message filling her in on him and sent the pictures.
Her response made me so sad.
She has allowed her kittens to have more litters. She has a 5 month old kitten who is apparently identical to my Joey. She asked if I knew anyone who would want him or if I wanted another kitten. The reason?? Her 5 month old cat is having issues getting along with the his mama cat. The joey lookalike had a sister cat too who gets along great with the mama cat I guess, but the lady thinks that the joey lookalike and the mama cat aren't getting along because the mama cat is pregnant again...because she promised her kids that she would let the cat have one more round of kittens!!!!!!
I dont get it! I can look on CL and see 5-10 kittens a day needing homes. Why would you purposely bring another litter of kittens into the world where there are already so many. She already was having trouble finding Joey lookalike and his sis a home, and now more kittens will be born needing homes.
GRRRR!!
This is probably a pointless post but it just bothers me and I needed to vent where people might actually understand!!

People like that make me so mad! I know a woman who won't have the cats are her house spayed because it's "too expensive." Her solution is to call the pound. Yet she will spend over $100.00 for a pocketbook.

I'd be writing that woman a "nice" letter about her irresponsibilty. I'd write exactly what you are feeling and give her the facts about overpopulation.

I hate that there are so many irresponsible people out there. My mother is a prime example she has all kinds of cats and doesn't bother getting any of them fixed and is one of those who believes a cat should have atleast one litter for its benefit, her sister believes the same way so I guess their parents must have taught them this. I have a friend, well or atleast I am a friend to her, and she refuses to get her dog neutered because he is an aggressive dog and she believes it will make him worse. I just don't understand how people can be so ignorant in this day and age.

You are preaching to the choir. My blood boils at these kind of situations. How do people make it through life being so stupid?

Ya know, she is nobody to you. I'd write back and tell her how you feel. It's about time someone did.

I'd write her back with your honest feelings, and educate her about overpopulation. If she is offended, who cares? What she's doing is counteracting all the work others do to help limit the number of homeless/unwanted animals!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
If there are any low-cost spay/neuter clinics in your area, I'd send that information to her with an appeal about how important it is to stop breeding because the world just doesn't need more kitties without homes! People are far more likely to take action if they don't have to put much work into it.

I have two sisters-in-law who are wonderful, intelligent people. One lives in a somewhat rural area, has a mother cat, and has allowed more than one litter to be born. I have repeatedly asked her to spay this cat, offered to do it myself (although she could buy and sell me twice) to no avail.

My other sister-in-law (along with my brother) has a big, furry groundhog of a male, indoor cat, who is neutered, and de-clawed. Has been for ten years (they didn't want their furniture messed up), and thank God, has never had behavioral problems from it.

Sometimes it is so hard to hold my tongue about things, I just wish more people would GET IT.

I wish I could take the 5 month old Joey lookalike...so bad! But we have 9 cats inside right now (2 are cats we took in as strays and are trying to find them homes...we have a friend who wants them when she moves into her own place but we aren't sure when it will be so we just care for them) plus 4 outside we take care of (one feral we feed, our neighbors cat bc they NEVER let him inside anymore and I don't think they feed him, an orange kitty that was a runaway from his home & the owners won't take responsibility for coming to get him, and another stray that has warmed up to my husband very much). We have a couple cat houses outside with heating lamps that are lined with straw and some old carpet pieces to keep them warm, and we feed them canned food daily & keep fresh water out there. I think if we had room for more cats we would definitely have more, but with doing daycare at home, we just don't have the room and money to care for more kitties.
I have started writing an email to her...I am trying to do it as nice as possible. I am including information about the low cost spay/neuter clinic that is near us, and include my observations about the number of kittens in our area without homes and how we certainly need no more. I am also thinking of offering to take the 5 month old to get neutered at the low cost clinic as I am sure he is not fixed...the woman also has an 8 month old female cat in the house, and I am concerned that that cat will end up pregnant. So frustrating!!
