Hi all,

My cat Raspy (3 years old) has been having the strangest thing happen lately. I've learned to take his signs when something is seriously wrong or not, and I find no signs from him. It comes and goes, too.

See, Raspy has always had one of those purrs you could hear from the other side of the room, and he's ALWAYS purring. But occasionally, when he really gets intense purring, you can hear (on top of his purring) his heart beat kind of give a slight 'oomph' to his purr. I know it's his heartbeat because I've checked it with his pulse. 120bpm-ish. Maybe a little less. You can even see his side kind of twitch along with the beat, almost like a muscle spasm.

Then, when you're done petting him and he calms down, he takes that deep breath and puts his purring from 'full on' to 'idle' and it stops. I swear, it only happens really late on Friday nights too, where I'd either have to pay out the nose for an emergency room (which it's not that intense) or wait until Monday, but then he's fine and I forget.

Is this a common action and/or condition? He's not overweight, in fact he's really quite muscular. Good teeth. Incredibly Active. Been feeding him the same stuff for years now (Purina One/Science Diet/Eagle Pack... which I cannot get where I live now.) Just has this weird thing that I just can't place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Upon further investigation, I found that you're not supposed to be able to hear or feel a cat's heart over their purring. Yeah, you can with him. Even when he's not like that. Weird.

I think I've got to ask - what does your vet say? I know it's tough for vets to get a good read all the time during the exam, since the cats are usually so nervous - but this sounds like something you need professional advice on.

You may even want to try finding a cardiologist for him. Your regular vet can refer you to one.
