to cats? Mine is ready to pop with blooms. It is not listed on the ASPCA list of poisonous plants to cats, but want to make totally sure.

It is upstairs in a closed off bedroom, but it is going to waste up there. Its probably at least 50 years old.

Thanks guys

Yea, I need to know this too.. Chickster doesn't chew on Mom's, but it has been blooming for awhile now and when a dead part falls off, she'll drag it around the house with her.

No. But it's delicate enough that they can easily damage it. If they were to eat enough of the plant it would cause vomiting - just like grass will.

Not toxic--they're actually edible. But a cat can damage the plant pretty badly. I wouldn't be able to keep one out, that's for sure.

According to:

While the ASPCA states that Christmas cactus--Schlumbergera bridgesii---is non-toxic to cats and dogs, pets should not be allowed to eat the stems or flowers. Growers may treat the plant with systemic insecticides. Additionally, the sap can be a feline allergen.

Thanks for all the replys guys.

This was moms plant forever. I know it has never been fertilized, at least not in the last 20 years!

So, I think I will bring it down....OMG, it weighs like 100 lbs. and put it on a smaller table so Beeba can't sit up with it and it will be too high. He will have to stand on his hind legs to get it.

I will keep it in our main room to be sure he does not chew on it.

Thanks all!

Haha, if it weighs that much make sure he can't tip it over on top of himself! My cats somehow managed to tip my TV over (it's not a new flat-screen; it's a big old box TV) and I'm glad that nobody got squished.

Oh I know, that would be a horible thing. It used to be on this tall pedistal, but I don't trust it anymore. So it's going on my grandmothers old sewing machine table, the kind that folds open and the machine comes up from underneath. When closed, you could park a car on it!
