Banj hisses & growls at his brother when sniffing scent of new kitten.

I got two boys from the same litter when they were about 8-9 weeks old. They are now 3 years old. I don't have any more pets. I recently have been desiring getting a 3rd cat and leaving that as my max. So I just adopted a little girl whom is about 9-10 weeks old.

I received her two days ago. I immediately brought her up to an empty guest bedroom set up for her with the works. My boyfriend helped her settle in while I gave attention to my two boys. They sniff under the door a bit and growl and hiss when she paws underneath. Whenever I let the boys smell her scent on a small blanket, my more dominate cat Banjo hisses at his brother Bossy. Then Bossy in return hisses and growls back and ends up backing up and leaving. Is it normal for them to do that to each other?

They don't seem to be *too* upset by her scent. Banj will have a low whiny growl as well as Bossy. They just get really hissy at each other when taking in her scent. Oh and they were both neutered when I got them. My new girl kitten is spayed as well.

Is there any kind of explanation for this? Should I be worried? I would like to continue the process of the introduction, but not if my two boys are going to fight each other.

Thank you in advance!

It's simply redirection. They smell a weird new cat smell and are upset and don't know what to to, so they grumble about it to whoever is nearest. I have one that if he smells another animal on my husband or I will growl at the other cats or even at us (even if the person he growls at isn't the one with the other animal smell on them).

As long as they're backing down, they shouldn't fight. Do take it slow and don't push them, though. Get some feliway diffusers for the home, too.

If you have not yet done so, please read the introduction thread found in this sticky. Check out some of the other topics as well since they cover a great bit that can be very useful for you in the future.

Also, make sure your new little girl is fully cleared of worms. Too many on here get ahead of themselves and then discover that the shelter/foster home that had their kitten or cat missed a deworming.
