cat showing signs of agression lately

Hi all I wonder if you can help me.

I have a 1 year old male cat and 99% of the time he is well behaved and calm but recently (about 4 times in the last 2 weeks) he has out of the blue showed signs of aggression towards me.

Each time he has been laying down calmly either on the floor or chair and then all of a sudden moved up to me and pounced he has dug his claws in my chest or one time he got hold of my hand and bit and wouldn't let go until I shook him off with a loud NO!. Now while he hasn't hurt me yet Im getting concerned with this behaviour as it comes out of the blue and it seems beyond just being playful. Each time he has also made a low pitched noise like cats do when you hear them fight.

Ive no idea whats triggering it. I thought it could be him trying to test me out and show dominance maybe? but Im no expert.

I have become a bit more weary of him now when he just comes up to me if im sitting down as I don't know what mood he's in which is a shame as he was always affectionate before and now I don't know what to expect.

Any ideas what could be causing this? or what I should do when it happens. thanks in advance.

I really have no idea. But the advice always given (here and elsewhere) is that if a cat's behavior changes drastically, there may be a health issue.

So, if he were my cat, I'd take him into the vet and have him looked over.

Here's another thought. When I was quite young, and at times life drove me to tears, I had a cat who would attack me then. I broke him of the habit by getting really mad at him (which wasn't an act) and letting him know I was upset with him (yelling, or squirt bottle of water, or loud unpleasant noisemaker), and pushing him away. The problem stopped, and I had that cat for 18 years. Maybe I cried less after a while, or maybe I cured his bad behavior.

So, is there something you could be doing that maybe freaking your cat out and triggers this?

Maybe he wants your attention and feels he's being ignored, and that's why?

Thanks for your replies.

There has been no incident or nothing has changed to provoke this behaviour. I went to the vet and he gave the cat a examination and found nothing and gave some calming drop things to see if they help.

Just today again I was just standing in a room and he came rushing up to me and acted as if he was ready to pounce on my leg but I clapped my hands and this stopped him then he went off. He's usually a laid back loving cat but when he goes like that he seems totally different and seems way more intense then if we were just playing.

Its getting a bit worrying now as I am definetly more weary of him there were a few days of nothing and then tonight bang he went like that again.

I'm sorry to hear this. Is he an indoor-only cat? Are there any Feliway Diffusers in your home? Feliway (also called Comfort Zone) is a calmative product that you plug into the wall. Do you live in cramped quarters?
