As some of you know, my year old cat, Finn, has been dealing with supposed food allergies. Early this fall, Finnegan began to develop hairless lesions on the inside of his back legs as well as on all four paws. Along with his vet, we ruled out any major issue and came to the conclusion that he was likely suffering from some sort of food allergy. After a course of Prednisolone, he was placed on Hill's Z/D and has improved dramatically. However, the Hill's Z/D is very expensive and, along with feeding my other cats (and other pets) a high quality diet, it has proven to be a bit out of my range. Of course, since that is what he needs, that is what he gets. But, due to my company's affiliation with Royal Canin, I have recently discovered that I can get their prescription food for half price. The difference is huge -- I pay $24.99 for 4 pounds of Hill's Z/D and about $2.25 per can. Royal Canin's hypoallergenic food, for me, costs $17.99 for 6 pounds. Unfortunately, they do not have a canned version of their food and so I'll be continuing with the Z/D for that, but I have made the decision to transition Finnegan to the Royal Canin kibble.

I have done a small trial of the RC food for Finn and he seems to tolerate it well. He has never loved the Hill's Z/D dry food and appears to prefer the Royal Canin kibble and, even though he receives dry as only 25% of his diet, the fact that he likes the Royal Canin better only solidifies my decision to transition him to that food. I ordered the RC food from the company yesterday and it should be delivered to my home within the next 3 days. I'll then start to mix it in to his current food. And, hopefully, we'll move forward from there. My goal is to have him on the Royal Canin dry kibble and on the Hill's Z/D canned food. I'm confident in my decision and have spoken at length with all of the vets at the practice where I work. All think I am moving in the right direction, but I'd still like to hear about other people's experience with the Royal Canin hypoallergenic food. It's one I've not seen mentioned here and so I am just interested in reading more about. I don't really need a breakdown of the ingredients as I've done that ad infinitum already, but, really, I'd just like to know how other kitties have done on this food. Thanks in advance!

I have not fed RC Hypo Allergenic food, but have fed 2 different RC prescription diets. I am currently Feeding RC Intestinal HE dry food. Both of my cats seem to do very nicely on it. In the past I have fed RC Duck & Green Pea, both canned and dry and again, my guys were fine on it.

Allison Joy,

i was wondering why you have chosen to use the Hills moist food over the royal canin? I am in a similar situation and am considering switching over to royal canin myself.  The reason being, my cats seem like they are starving on the Hills and i was worried they were not getting enough nutrients from the Hills so my vet suggested we try the royal canin.  I have not made the switch yet. What do you think.

Allison, I have no experience with it. As you know, it didn't help Carolina's Bugsy.

And Allison may have reviewed ingredients extensively, but for others joining the thread, the Royal Canin has no animal-based protein in it at all. In fact, the only animal-related ingredient is some chicken fat. :(

The Hill's dry and the Royal Canin dry both have brewer's rice as a main ingredient. When we tried to manage Chumley's allergies with commercial food, it turned out brewer's rice was a problem for him. But if someone has been feeding Hill's z/d dry and it resolved the allergy problem, the switch to Royal Canin hypoallergenic dry shouldn't be an issue from that standpoint.
