Acting Out After Moving

We just moved from our in-laws house and brought our 1 1/2 year old cat along with us. From the time he was born he's lived with 4 other cats, someone was almost always home, and was allowed outside whenever he wanted. Today was his first day home alone in our new house (from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.). We came home from work to find that he had used our new mattress instead of his litterbox.

He also moans around the house as if looking for his playmates, and we have to constantly push him away from the door when we leave or enter the house so he doesn't escape.

The first day he was at the new house, I made sure he knew where the litterbox was, even saw him use it.

My question is, is there hope that he will adjust to this new situation? Should we get a kitten to be his playmate? Or does he really need to go back and live at the old house?

Thanks!

A playmate would be a good idea. Since he's used to so much interaction, I'm sure he's really lonely and bored sitting around the house alone all day. Also, that's a lot of stuff for him to deal with. Cat's hate change. He's upset about:

Moving
No other cats
Not being let outside
Being alone all day

Any one of those issues alone can cause behavioral problems, let alone all four put together. He will adjust, but it may take hima couple weeks to start acting normal again.
