Question re Word 2007 for Windows

Could somebody help me, please? My question pertains to Word 2007.

I finished working on a cookbook and have printed out several copies. That got old quickly; just the cost of the ink alone is expensive. I talked to somebody at Staples and she said that if I'd put the book on a CD, she could print it and bind it for me (normally I print it out, then take the book to Staples for binding).

I have each chapter saved as a separate file. Each chapter cover page is also separate. My Spices and Herb chart is separate. As are the Indexes (one is by subject; the other is alphabetically indexed). Everything is done in Word.

Is there a way that I can merge all the chapters and files together to create a single file? Keep in mind that I need to keep all the formatting, headers, graphics, etc. unchanged.

I tried to simply add the Breads and Rolls chapter to my Appetizers and Beverages chapter....it worked, BUT all the formatting changed. And the Breads and Rolls header simply became Appetizers and Beverages. Not what I want. If I have to go through each chapter and re-do the formatting and such, it will take me forever. Not to mention that I had trouble trying to change the headers at the section breaks.

I'm thinking that it might be cheaper in the long run to just merge everything onto one CD and have Staples do the work than for me to try to print chapters as I go. I need about ten copies of the cookbook and that will take forever to print it out on my ink jet printer. Some of the people who've requested copies have said that they'd be most happy to pay for them. I still think it would be cheaper for Staples to do the work. I want to give them a CD and say, "Do it!"

Using 5.5 x 8.5-inch paper, which is essentially one 8.5 x 11-inch sheet of paper cut in half.

Can somebody help me with this? Thank you!

Can you save to PDF? It's pretty easy to merge PDF files...

Yes, I can do that. Never thought of that! Thank you!

Once it's together as a .pdf, once it's printed, will it still be adequately printed on that size paper and have my formatting OK?

Formatting should be ok, as well as size. Open it up in Adobe just in case though! If you can't get it all to one file, I have Acrobat Professional; you could always email me the files.

Only one thing: is it like spiral bound where you just print and put together, or is it stapled in the middle where you have to put like page 1 and 56 on the same page...?

It is spiral bound and it is printed on both sides of the paper. There are about 300 pages in all, including the Table of Contents and both indexes.

I may run into some problems with Staples printing the book as the whole cookbook is in full color because of the graphics I used. But I don't want it in black/white. The woman at Staples seems to think that it would be cheaper for them to do it versus me doing it. I know it would be easier on me! She said she could give me a better idea of price once she saw everything.

(She also said that she would give me a discount, if I let her have a copy of the book! She had bound my first copy and loved it.)

This might do what you need. If you want to insert the whole document into your single document, select the Insert Tab. In the Text section, there is an Object button. Click on that and then "create from file". That will insert a mini-Word doc into your main doc, keeping all of the formatting of the original document.

If you only want a section, you can copy the section. On the Home tab, select the arrow under the Paste button, then select "Microsoft Word Document Object". That does the same sort of action.

There's also the option of creating a master document, which just links to your original documents. It can get a bit convoluted, but there are tutorials out there that can tell you how to set that up.

I had to do that for a project at work, and then I opened the master doc and was able to create one complete PDF from just the one document.
