Aki my little 30 month old cat with a long history of apparent food allergies that never resolve has slowly been less interested in eating his Z/D and I told the vet a week ago he is doing the same thing he did with Natural Balance Venison after 5 months, massive licking and scratching right after ingestion and swallowing alot like he is trying stop regurgitation. In my mind this is cycle that happens 3-6 months on a food and we need to cycle to something else. Which is dangerous because anything other then Z/D and NB limited has made his lips and mouth swell.
My Vet believes its impossible its Z/D allergy that bad, keep on it and use alot of petromalt as its likely a hairball from his over grooming. Well it gave him diarrhea as of yesterday so I immediately stopped. I cant see how he has a hairball blockage when he been going to bathroom daily and now has diarrhea to boot. He vomited Z/D at noon yesterday. Slept and didnt move much till 4am this morning where he did his cry for food. Licked at the teaspoon of Z/D, smelled the tray alot and went back to bed without eating much at all.
I dont know what to do if this continues, how long before organ failure usually? I do see him near the water bowls at times. I cant tell how much he is drinking but I hope he is getting liquids at least. I spent $700 on him in last month including teeth cleaning two weeks ago, funds just arent there, he is like $4k a year cat and I just cant keep up anymore and nothing resolves.
Facts:
1)Failed teeth cleaning 3 weeks ago, liver count 245. We do liver function test instead and its functioning and then the Vet tells me 245 is no big deal actually it can go into 800s.
2)Teeth cleaning finally happens 2 weeks ago.
3) I bring him in one week later upset with how much I cant control endless dark debris/ ear infections every six hours and how he swallows/stomach contracts after eating it. 16 qtips a day and he still shakes his head all night.Zymox is useless as is other natural nonsteriod means .
4)Vet says even though his liver is 200 higher then when he was young we have to start up with Mometamax steriod antibodic again and gives him a big dose in both ears.
5)Here we are 5 days later. Vet believes he cant get that bad on Z/D, while I am tempted to go grab an old Natural Balance diet I know he didnt swell in the mouth with in the past as he could be trying to tell me the Z/D is the cause. Maybe I am overacting and need listen to Vet. The diarrhea itself maybe why he is not eating yet? Either way I feel like I am killing my cat.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
We didn't have much success treating Chumley's allergies with our usual vets, so we found a DVM trained in alternative medicines, and he's being treated right now with Chinese herbal medicinals. Too early to say how they're working.

That said, we did try z/d. But we were feeding him both the wet and the dry. When we eliminated the dry food (beginning of November), he seemed to become a bit less itchy/scratchy. We're pretty sure the brewer's rice in the dry food was a trigger for him.

However, his holistic vet says that he has an extreme Yin deficiency - this is what appears as allergies to us. He also has a spleen Qi deficiency, which results in a VERY sensitive GI system. We started his treatments under her supervision this past Thursday.

I do know that some cats can develop sensitivities, and I would listen to Aki. If he doesn't want to eat the z/d, don't force him to. Rotating food for cats with that level of sensitivity seems to make a lot of sense, as it helps prevent them developing the sensitivities to the various ingredients.

Tried feeding him, he licked so little yet 3 minutes later he started crying and then vomited yellow liquid in two spots. I thought his mouth or tongue looked abit white the few seconds he opened it. 8:30 tomorrow they can see me.

Try posting over in the feline nutrition forum for help, too. Also, you can inbox Sharky and ask for her input.

As for limited ingredient diets,
my experience with them so far is that New Balance didn't work at all...
Royal Canin limited ingredient prescription Venison & Pea does...at least for now.

I tried several of the Hills but not the Z/D.
I was thinking of trying that on Dexter because he has gas now...
maybe from to many peas.

This issue is so complicated...
I really feel for you and Aki.

Is it true that the yellow fluid is probably bile which indicates liver function problems? Or do those that had major hairball issues see yellow liquid too?

Z/D here in my house worked wonders for IBD/IBS, but I can see it might not be working for you... Per my vet, when cats vomit, it is normal to see bile, the yellow liquid you are seeing... However it is not normal to see it when it is related to hairball problems. It is also not normal to see it when the kitty is regurgitating food... Therefore there is something wrong with his tummy... He should definitely be checked by a vet - throwing up once, it might not be worrisome when you are giving med... more the that it is a reason to worry.
If New Balance worked for you, I would go back to that food...
P.S. try mixing Z/D with water and mashing it well to see if he will eat - my cats won't eat unless I make it into a soft pure...
