Is the 3-year rabies vaccination bad/dangerous for cats? I've been hearing conflicting information. Some people say it's better to have the vaccinations done every 3 years to minimize the chance of a reaction and because vaccines last longer than a year, and others say that the vaccine used for the 3-year version is not good for cats?

The three-year vaccination is an older protocol. It has been known to cause sarcomas at the injection site. The PureVax is only a 1-year vaccine, but it was designed to address that problem.

We have older kitties that only every had the 3-year vaccine. Because they never had a reaction, we will continue that schedule, though they may develop a sarcoma at the site - we won't know unless or until it happens. Hasn't happened yet (knock wood). However, for our new adoptions, we've used the PureVax (1-year vaccine) since they weren't exposed to the sarcoma problem to begin with.

I've been getting my cats the 1 year rabies vaccination for a long time now, on the advice from my vet, after we discussed my concerns about vaccinations in general. What LDG said is the issue.

I just had my semi-feral cat, Ariel, get the 3 year one, however, because getting her into the carrier is Hell and I don't want to go through that soon, if possible. Even a year from now is too soon.

But for my other 4 cats, they will continue to get the 1 year Purevax vaccination as it seems to be safer.

The last time my girls got their rabies shot, they each got the 3 year. When Tumbles finished his kitten shots, he got the 1-year rabies. The girls probably won't be getting another rabies, especially Hannah since she's got feline herpes. Callie's old and has kidney problems, so no more vacs for her either.

Same Here ... kitten series then the booster is the three year and we discuss each cat after that ... My vets have not found enough evidence that the one yr purvex will be any safer in the long run ...
