cat attacking

My daughter has a 14 yr old male cat that attacks her for no reason. She was asleep and he attacked her and bit her on the cheek. Of course it woke her up and her immediate reaction was to smack him on the butt. But then he will be real affectionate. Why does he do this?

I don't think he attacked her. He probably wanted to play. Smacking the cat is not very nice though.

He probably wanted her attention, or he needed to be fed. Luna will bite while showing affection. She'll also bite if she's hungry.

More details, please. How long has he been doing this? Was he laying in bed with her before he bit? Had be been asleep?
