Queen Eva is home....and rekkin havvok already!

I made her such a nice cozy Castle:

but within minutes she'd destroyed it.

So I put her in the carrier, cleaned the mess, and made it a bit more utilitarian, Litter box contained in the cut out tote, small light blankie, easy to remove, wash and air dry in minutes

but she made a mess of that too, (soaked the blankie) so out came the blankie

She then decided to tightrope walk around the edge of the tote containing the litter box (I didn't get a picture of it, but here's an example of what I mean)

so I had to put the cover on.

I didn't use the cover at first thinking to prevent her jumping on and off it, but I think that is better than tightrope walking That will make a nice platform for her self warming bed...when it dries.

The details:

Queen Eva has to live in her Castle for two weeks. She has to go back to see the vet at that time to evaluate her status. Monitor bathroom habits (which I do anyway). Any sign of inappetence, lethargy or weakness, call immediately, if it is off hours instruct the exchange service to page my vet. She's come home with pain medication for two or three more days.

She's really wild, The cage may be too big. I may have to put her in the carrier periodically to keep her quiet. There's no room to do anything but lie down in the carrier.

I've never had to contain a kitten like this before, I may be relying heavily people here with more experience.

I'm glad she's home and that she's doing ok

PS the other cats are fine. Just a little hissing from Mazy cat, (Jennie, as usual just ignored the whole issue) but Tolly has been over there singing duets with her.

I was so happy to be bringing her home, but somehow I overlooked how much of a problem it might be keeping her quiet and contained.

Aw, I'm so glad to see that Queen Eva is back where she belongs. But, yes, containing her in her castle for two weeks is going to be quite the challenge!

P.S. You might want to make a comment on your other thread pointing people to this thread as many people are wondering if she's home yet.

P.P.S. Glad that the other cats still know her.

I'm so happy she's back home. Hopefully she calms down a bit.

Yahoo! This is such good news! She probably has the vet "smell" on her and that is why she got hissed at.

Yea, it will be a challenge to confine her.

I hope every day she gets better and better. You have been through a lot. Exhale, and take a break from the worry.

She sure is a much loved little girl!!

So far I've lucked out with my kittens. They don't view their carrier as punishment or going to the vet. Luna will even jump in her carrier on her own and sleep for awhile. She found it's the only place she can hide from Midnight, and get a moments peace from him. Midnight doesn't like going in but his carrier is big enough where he can play with his ball and after awhile he'll lay down. After Luna was spayed she spent a week in her carrier. The first few days was our choice, so she wouldn't move around and rip her stitches out. The rest of the week was her choice. She'd use her box then walk right back in.

Lynxx always hated his carrier. To him it meant going to the vet. We did have to keep him in his carrier that last night, because he was so weak, when he tried to jump off his favorite chair to get to the litter box he just fell off. We were afraid to leave him any where but his carrier, we didn't want him to hurt himself. He just layed in there, but he couldn't move around anyway because he was so sick.

She is home, she is home!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, I am sure you don't want me to be giggling, but I couldn't help but to giggle at her antics! It must mean she is feeling alright though... Counterproductive, I know, but nonetheless a good sign!

Me and my kitties send you both all the love, vibes, purrs and hugs in the World!
Welcome home sweetheart!
Just wondering, can you give her a bit of Rescue Remedy? That might calm her down a little?

Carolina, I'm going to ask the vet, I was thinking about the rescue remedy. She's on buprenex though, so I don't know if she can have it......
You don't have to "give" her the Rescue Remedy. If you buy the glycerin-based formula, you can add 2-3 drops to her water OR just dab a touch under her chin, behind her ears and at the base of her tail (more isn't better for flower essences). It either does nothing or works like a charm.

And with that said....

I'm so glad she's home. Hopefully she settles down soon. When I brought Kiefer home after his hernia surgery, the little demon played vigorously for 2 1/2 hours straight. Queen Eva just doesn't understand that she should be resting.
Such good news that she is home and acting up! It is hard to keep them calm when they just want to play and explore. But I wouldn't worry too much about keeping everything spotlessly clean at this moment - let her do what she likes until she is used to it.

I forgot to mention Carolina, it's okay to laugh. I know it's funny, how she trashed her Castle first thing.

Oh yeah, that's right I can rub it on. Well I can't find the bottle I used to have and it's probably expired anyway.

Thank you. Terrific advice, and now that she is quiet I realize she just had to go wild for a while. Whew!

I had left a panicked message on my vet's voice mail about how she was going crazy, hoping around like a jumping bean.

She called me back and I gave her the details and my vet laughed and laughed. Vet said, if she gets too upset about being in the crate, to let her out, especially at night, as Queen Eva usually just comes to bed and sleeps anyway.

Yes, Mazy hissed at the vet smell but only a little. They are all accustomed to the vet smell, we are there so often.

Thank you so much for all the support. You're right, deep breaths and relax. I have a My Three Sons dvd to watch tonight, while I sew on a cat bed. My favorite winter evening past time.

I was going to mention about rescue remedy - They have it in Spray too... This is what my rescue lady used to spray on the carriers before shipping the kitties back with the new parents... Just an idea... it might work too

Hi Otto,

That is a very nice cage/crate. It truly is a castle. But as you can see that is a no no . She can damage herself easily in there so it seems.

Remember cats that have not been caged go "nuts" in many cases. If they are not used to being crated. This is why all my cats are used to being crated.

Anyway what I am going to suggest will sound to cruel to you and everyone else who reads it, but this is what should be done in my opinion as a licensed vet tech and a cat rescuer.

First you need to get a much smaller crate, in both height and length. You need to get one that holds her litter box and a small food and water dish. Then throw a towel on the crate floor for her to lay on.

So yes, that makes it so she can barely move. But that is the only way to keep a cat that is NOT used to being crated and or confined fairly calm. Also you need to wait 12 hrs at least before offering food and water. Why you ask it is so that cat will not make the mess shown above. Also give a very small amount of water at a time over the next 48 hrs till she is calm and used to being crated.

Like I said in the other post I would move the crate to the bedroom.

Hi Cat Person, thanks for your suggestions! Your ideas don't sound cruel at all, sometimes a cat does need to be kept in a more restricted space, it all depends on what's right in each individual case.

I know she was in a smaller cage at the hospital, (for five days) but vet said the size of Queen Eva's Castle is okay. (I brought pictures in to show vet the set up)

Queen Eva has been eating with hearty appetite for three days now while still in the hospital, there wasn't any need to withhold food or water. The mess did not upset me, she was just being her havvok rekkin self, and I fixed it now so she can't repeat it.

Queen Eva is used to being crated. She lived in her Castle for her first week here, and has continued to use it during outside adventures, with no problems.

(I take my cats out, harnessed, in a fenced yard. Queen Eva has been kept in her Castle when we are in the yard, almost exclusively, except for two short experimental forays for just a few minutes at the end of our last two outside sessions. Since then winter has come, so no more outside for them)

She was just going a little bonkers what with being newly home and all. And yeah, I freaked out. But it's better now, whew!

She's had her pain meds, another meal (hand fed ), a good long cuddle with me and now she's napping again.

I've decided to keep her Castle out in the living area. It's warmer out here and she can see me and the other cats, and she can see into the bedroom, so when I go to bed, she will know where I am. I have fleece blankies draped on the sides of the crate, and the back faces the wall.

I appreciate you taking the time to post your thoughts. Many people read these boards and your helpful suggestions may be just what someone else, with slightly different circumstances, needs to know. .

otto, I think your setup is perfect... I can just imagine how excited she was, and why she was oh-so-(hugely cute and funny)-messy.
I am also so glad you have a great vet, who approved your setup... I think that makes all the difference in the World doesn't it? When your vet is personally involved in your case and has your baby's best interest at heart? I followed all your posts about our little queen whie she was in the hospital, and was deeply impressed with the level of care they gave her in there... They sound not only extremely competent (it sounded SO serious) but very loving too .
I also like your idea of the living room and covering the sides with the blanket - I had read that works well...
I am just happy she is home with her mommy and the worst is over now

I'm so glad she's finally home with her Meowmy and fur-siblings, even though she IS rekkin havvok. It's doubly great that she's even been "released" to sleep with you if needbe. (I would probably find that completely necessary

Oh yes, Carolina, it really does. She was so bonded to them, it was clear she was getting a high level of care. They all loved her and made a fuss when I took her home. I love my vet, and I love the clinic. There hasn't been a change in staff there in all the years I've been going there, and that says a lot. When ALL the people love their jobs, and stay, there must be something good about the place!

Thank you!

Well I left her in her Castle, because we had a mishap last night. I let her out last night to see how she would handle it. Before I could stop her she tore down the stairs, jumped up on a bench, but fell back, and pulled a bucket down on top of herself.

From there she ran back upstairs -with me in hot pursuit- and ran straight into her Castle. She was in pain too, I could tell by the way she was running, with her middle all humped up. You ever see how a raccoon moves? Sort of like that.

She got very quiet after that so I knew she was hurting. It was time for her buprenex dose, so I gave it to her. That stuff is fast acting, she was stoned in minutes.

But she hasn't tried to dash out since.

She cried a little after I went to bed but I didn't respond, then she had a poop, so I got up and cleaned her box (I put her in the carrier when I have to clean the Castle). Then she cried a little more but finally all was quiet and we all slept.

So, she's going to stay in there for a good while longer I think. I think it will get easier as time goes on, she'll adjust to being there. Queen Eva is just so clumsy, she always has been, she just can't be trusted to have free roam until she is completely recovered.

Good thing I got rid of the couch, otherwise the Castle would be taking up the whole living room!

You are doing exactly what your girl needs...
watching her closely so you can judge the best environment for her healing process.
She is a lucky girl to have a loving Mommy like you.
Continue your healing Queen Eva.

Oh hooray!! So glad to get back home and see that not only is Queen Eva doing better, she's well enough to be HOME!! You're doing such a good job with her! Once she gets used to the new temporary set-up, she'll probably calm down. Also, the meds she's been given the past week or so plus the pain meds may be causing her to be a bit more antsy than normal. So glad she's home where she can recuperate in luxury surrounded by familiar people and her other fur-siblings.
