Lola's 1 year on Phenobarbitol check-up

Lola had her 1 year re-check today....it's been 1 year since she's been on Phenobarbitol. Her last full blood panel was in Dec '09, shortly after I brought her home to foster.

She's skinny, but the vet thinks she'll always be that way. She has minor difficulties eating, so takes longer to get food in & she's always moving.

Her dosage is only at .4cc, which translates out to like 4-6mg or something close to that?

Her liver enzymes came back good today, too.

Pheno can be a doubled edged sword - as it is necessary (in her case) to prevent seizures, yet it ultimately can prove damaging to the liver. So far so good.

Thanks for the update on Lola! Tolly did not begin showing liver damage until he'd been on the phenobarbital for 8 1/2 years. And he was on almost three times as much as Lola. Of course every cat is different, but I hope that is reassuring to you.

Lola is my favorite.

PS did they do a phenobarbital level test, too?

We haven't done one yet, & I guess I don't know that we're going to. I think the vet has to send it out & it's very expensive for the test.

That's great news Nat! It's amazing how much better she is now than when she came to you.

Yes it is expensive. She's on such a low dose, you don't have to worry about a toxic level anyway. The test can be helpful not only to check for toxic levels, but if there are breakthrough seizures it can show if the level in the blood should be raised, by increasing the dose.

When Tolly was younger I didn't do annual phenobarbital levels either, just the superchem. I do now, though, since he is older, and been on it so long.
