Hi all!
New here to the board as I am in need of some information.

I am currently in the middle of a horse rescue (along with his pet cat) and this kitten showed up. He crawled up under my truck and came home with me!
Anyhow, after 2 1/2 hours we got him caught.

SKINNY! Bones all over. I can feel every single one of them.
Dehydrated
Cold
Sneezing
Watery eyes
Fever
Swallows in a way that signifies a sore throat
Front bottom jaw/lip has something going on. Almost looks like the lip was ripped away from the gum..or he just holds it open? And he had a 'crust' on his bottom teeth.
Nasty breath
Fleas galore
Ear mites: poster child

2:30AM
I gave 1/8 of a baby aspirin *no flames please*
hard kibble and he ate a few bites and quit.
warm water
Cleaned his eyes

1st day
The next day we just got him warmed up and made the decision that night he had to go to the vet. (If he made it through that day then he was strong enough to fight for life)
Will not eat soft kitty food
Will not drink kitty milk
Sipped only a little water. No food
We noticed he doesn't lie down. Sits up and just stares at my son. He will even start to close his eyes and wobble over, catch himself and then sit back up.
He had pooped on the floor and then peed on my sons bed.

2nd Day at the vet
1.25 lbs (re-checked as there is no way..but it was that. She used the huge dog scale so I still think this is wrong
)
Negative for Leukemia
Given a Comfortis pill
Wormed
Clovamax
Ear drops

Last night I gave him a little tiny syringe of soft catfood 'juice'. Trying to get something in him. Well that sucked! LOL

TODAY 3rd day
Still not using the litter box. I've even put him in a rubbermaid box with the litter pan taking up 3/4 of the thing.
I've went from Silicone to straight sand from my horse paddock (that's gotta be close to what he's used to)
Nothing. He just holds it in and wont go.
I've put him in the bathtub to see if he'd go in there (UTI check) Nope. Won't stay in there. LOL
He still sits up on the desk just staring at my son or looking up.
Still 'gulps' like a sore throat.
Still has not eaten.

What can I do?
I can't let him out as I have another cat. He's in quarantine.
My son's room is all new berber carpet!
What I'd like to do is just let him have a place where if he pees on the floor...who cares, wipe it up. I don't have that option.
The box drives him nuts and he makes a huge mess..overturning the water and such.

Any advice is welcome. I am not a cat person so I'm out of my element.
I just have a magnet attached to my butt that calls in all the strays and rescues
(two horses rescued, three dogs, five cats, and a bird)
My current horse rescue is burying me financially. It's a BLM mustang that is still BLM property (not titled). The BLM is working with me to repossess it from my neighbors. I've been feeding and caring for it since November 10th...along with his 'pet cat'. Skin over bones. Both of them.

SO...any help would be nice.
I don't want the kitty to die but I also cannot put tons into it. I don't have donations coming in.

thanks for trying to help this little guy out! did the vet explain what they think is wrong with him (beyond malnutrition)? if he is holding his mouth open that indicates something very serious (either injured or unable to breathe through nose). seems odd if the vet didn't recommend something for appetite stimulation.

Can you keep him in a bathroom or other small room until he stabilizes? a barn cat may need some remedial training to use a litterbox so until then your kid's bed is in danger!

the 'hard swallow' is common in sick cats, not sure if it indicates anything specific. i'm surprised he won't eat canned food, if you can find chicken baby food (look for the stuff that is just chicken, not the 'stew' variety). most cats go nuts for that stuff.

the important thing now is to get him eating and drinking. it can be rough at first, when a kitten gets congested it can't smell its food so it doesn't always recognize something it edible. get some tuna (or mackerel or sardines), if he can smell it he may eat on his own. good luck and please let us know how it goes.
