Dusty update and questions

Some may remember that Dusty nearly died several months ago. She has CRF and also had a horrible ear infection that nearly killed her. Well she recovered from that.

So here is the curious part. Dusty has gained weight. I don't know how much, but I no longer feel her backbone and the shape of every vertebrae like I did back when she was really sick and we were talking about where we would bury her. Her gums look better too - not nearly as white as when she was really anemic. I've been feeding her raw chicken liver a couple of times a week. But here is the really odd thing. She has a big appetite - eats at least one 5.5 oz. can of cat food a day plus grazes on the dry kibble. Even in her younger years before she was diagnosed with CRF she never ate that much! - Maybe 1 can of Fancy Feast (3 oz) a day and sometimes less.

She is a DLH, and while her fur is getting thick for winter, I notice it doesn't shine as much as it used too. Back when she was sick, her fur fell out, especially around her neck and behind her ears where it was completely bald. All that has grown back now.

She still can't jump as much or as high as she used to. And she has never been a playful kitty. Nothing has changed there.

I know that CRF can't be reversed or cured, but my question is to what do you attribute her weight gain? And why is her appetite so much bigger? What does this all mean?

I'm confused.

My RB crf girl went in spurts ... she would eat like a horse or a bird

Is she on any meds?

No. I've made the decision not to medicate her. I'm just baffled. I'm so happy that she seems to feel well enough to eat like a horse!

Maybe you can get a clear picture of how she is doing with a senior panel at the vet? When is she going next?

I understand thyroid issues can make them very hungry...

Dusty continues to amaze me. She ate raw turkey liver as well as some cooked turkey meat from the turkey I cooked over the weekend. She enjoys her raw chicken livers that I give her on occasion. Last year and as far back as I can remember she wouldn't touch any turkey parts - cooked or raw. She has easily gained 1.5 lbs since her near fatal sickness last spring. I'm so happy to see her eat and gain weight. She is still a lightweight at 6.5 lbs, compared to Squeaky at 12.5 lbs, but at least she is eating and not throwing up.

She has also become quite friendly. We had company over the weekend (to share the turkey I cooked!) and she crawled right up on my friend's lap! Now my friend has a cat, so maybe she knew Pat was cat friendly, but she would never do that in years past.

I couldn't be happier with her condition! Here's hoping she still has another 3 or 4 cat lives left!

Glad to hear about Dusty. I hope she continues to do so good.

They never cease to surprise us dont they?
