Daily Question: Tues. Nov. 30

A little later than normal as I had some volunteer training today, but alas here it be

If you were only able to have 3 material possessions (excluding money, I mean items such as a photo, a figuriene, etc), what would they be?

Yes it is a thinker today.

You sure did give us a thinker today!!

My house caught fire about 10 years ago. Even though it didn't burn down, it really made me think about what was important in my life.

Honestly, as long as you don't include my critters as material possessions, there wasn't anything that I couldn't live without. However, due to the annoyance of having to recreate things, I would like to have a back up of my hard drive (all my pictures and records are stored there) and my fire safe (original papers that can't be stored on my hard drive). Other than that, I have a gold bracelet that my dad bought for my mom on their 25th wedding anniversary that I would like to be able to pass on to a family member.

Material possessions are over rated in the grand scheme of things.

Wow. You said almost exactly what I was thinking when I first read this question. I came home 3 1/2 years ago to my apartment having been destroyed by fire. My first thought, (and I had no pets at the time) was, "I hope the pictures of Mom and Dad survived." And they had. I still think about that being my first thought.

All the rest was just "stuff". The firefighters saved my very old piano, which I am eternally grateful for. Someone had heard one of them say, "Don't get water on the piano".

So, I guess I would have to say:

Pics of my mom and dad.
My piano
My laptop

My gosh that's a hard one to answer!

I guess all my genealogy/family heirlooms would be at the top of my list.

My doll collection.

My Halloween collection.

Do 'collections' count as 1 item?

This is a tough one Chris. I guess I'd have to go:

1. My external hard drive for my computer.
2. My guitars.
3. I have a list of various serial numbers and info for insurance purposes. I'd be sure to grab that too.

If collections count as one thing, then for sure my watch collection.

apart from that it would be my classic car

and I really don't know what else.

Well I'm assuming Emmy will be with me, right? If that's the case she'll need
1. food
2. feliway
3. her favorite blanket
That's all I need

Since my computer died last Saturday I am thinking of better ways to save my files.

First on my list would be the stuffed dog that I have had since I was a baby.

Second my computer.

Third is hard, maybe my wallet and the stuff in it?

1.Books
2.Computer
3.Cats (Yes, since we have four I think of them as a collection)!
Not necessarily in that order.

My cat
My child
My jewelery box (has all of our birth certificates/marriage license/important junk/etc in it)

Everything else can be easily replaced. I don't really have anything important on my computer.

I was actually randomly thinking about that the other day! I would take the things that my grandparents have handed down to me; honestly, it's the things from my family that mean the most to me.

I would take:

1. My Russian "Pop"'s pocketwatch and the picture of him and I that I keep beside it

2. The candle holders that my Granny gave me (my "Pop's" wife/grandmother. Those candle holders survived the Holocaust and hold a lot of special meaning to me)

3. My Nannie's sugar jar (She gave it to me shortly before she passed away and it makes me smile everytime I use it and remember her)

--Both my Nannie and my Pop have passed away ("Pop" is my grandad on my father's side). He passed when I was younger. My Nannie (grandmother on my mom's side) passed back in Feburary.) They were two of the most amazing people I've ever met in my life. I miss them both dearly! My Granny is still alive ("Pop's wife") and I go to visit her often.

Hmmm, ok I'm reading too much into this. Well, if we can only save three material things from a fire or natural disaster I would grab the lockbox with all the insurance and financial info in it, my grandfather's painting and our wedding photo album. If it is just 3 things I can keep and give up everything else, it would be the house (the furniture can go but the house will at least give us shelter), a car, and my grandfather's painting. Sorry, that just can't be replaced.

I don't consider animals, husband or food (human or cat/dog) as monetary items, which is why I need a car to make sure I can get a job to buy more. Good lord, it's an evil cycle. Of course, we could hunt and gather like our ancesters did.

1) photo albums

2) my folder with birth and marriage certicates, adoption orders

3) The coin set my father gave me when I was 2
