Freaked Out!

Hello All!

So we have an indoor/outdoor cat that is 2 yrs old, female & fixed. She has always been fairly confident going outside and even leaving our yard and exploring the neighborhood, but always coming home everyday etc. She has always slept outside and only come in during the day. About 1 month ago she was gone for a whole week and when we found her we had a hard time getting her to come to us/trust us.

Apparently she had a very bad experience "out in the world" and now will only stay in the back rooms of our house (where she was not previously allowed) and when she is there, she is happy and sweet. She will not go in the rooms that she previously loved (but are near "the outdoors") and will pee herself if we take her outside.

We have a feliway diffuser and keep feeding her closer and closer to her old rooms but she is still very freaked out by the very thought of going outside.
We have been trying to rehabilitate her over the last month but she is no closer to living outside again... which must be the final result as we cannot maintain a full house cat.

What should we do to help her be ok with being outside again? Is taking her outside once a day and letting her hide in a kitty house a good idea? Will slowly moving her food towards the outer rooms/outside help her transition? Any suggestions would help! Thanks a bunch!

So this is an inside/outside kitty... who obviously went through something so traumatizing she is completely freaked out of the thought of going outside again, to the point of urinating herself over it - I take something really bad happened, probably dangerous...
Is it really necessary to put herself on harms way again?

IMHO if she can not be kept safely inside, maybe it might be the case of rehoming her for a house where she can feel and be safe...

I know it hurts to hear this, and it is not what you want to hear, but what she went through must been horrible enough for her to be this terrified... An inside outside cat almost never (I n have never seen before) wants to be inside only, so I can only begin to imagine what she wen through....

It might be actually something dangerous out there, and if not, she will be terrified anyways, which is no good....

So, is there any possible way to keep her inside only?
If not, I truly think that rehoming her might be something you may want to look into...

Can I ask what your issues are with maintaining a full time house cat? Cats are pretty independent creatures, and although they need and crave attention and interaction from their humans, I leave mine alone for up to a couple of days/nights with no trouble at all. And I don't even have two litterboxes - I don't have the space for them. I just clean her box everyday.

I have to agree with Carolina that if you indeed can't maintain a full time house cat, the best thing for her would be to rehome her. Personally, I'm not a fan of letting cats outside to roam - there are just too many things that can happen to them, and it shortens their average lifespan considerably.

I'm really sorry, but I have to agree with Carolina. It sounds like she is literally scared to death about something out there. Cat's that go outside all the time aren't usually easily scared by anything. It seems like something or someone must have really tried to hurt her and by the sound of her reaction is seems like she just barely got out of it.

Is there anyway she can just stay indoors? It might take a little bit of retraining, but it seems better than potentially endangering her life.

Trust me. I lost two of my sweet ones before I got the clue and decided to keep them indoors permanently.

Please consider your kitties reactions or at least investigate. Are there wild cats or coyotes around? Maybe a band of teenagers in the area that might have roughed her up? A mean dog or a cat hating neighbor?

I would at least do a long hard look into the area before I even considered rehabilitating her.

As to the concerns for the outside environment, we have since installed a cat fence that will contain the cat to our backyard and therefore the bad/dangerous environment should no longer be an issue.

But again, advice on actually re-acclimating the cat to going outside would be appreciated.
