Isn't there a low-cost spay/neuter option in your area? I think I remember you mentioning it before. If so, that would be the first order of business, otherwise they'll keep having more and more babies and you'll never be able to place them all. Ladies first, of course. Even if they never get placed at least they won't be breeding.

It's wonderful that you are trying to help these kitties, but more info would be helpful. I'm not sure just what it is you want help with and exactly what the situation is with these kitties. It sounds like these are feral or semi-feral cats that live outdoors.

Do you want to get them spayed/neutered and maintain the colony, taming the youngest and placing them in homes? There are many sites on how to tame feral kittens and feral cats. I've done this and it does work. Here's a couple.
http://www.feralcat.com/taming.html
http://www.for-the-love-of-cats.com/TameFeralCat.html

If that is the case, you will need the help of a feral cat colony caregiver to help with trapping and to find low cost spay/neuter. They will tip the ears and spay the pregnant females, usually at no additional cost, giving a rabies vaccine, etc. It's called TNR for Trap/Neuter/Return. Then it will become your responsibility to feed and maintain the colony.

If you want to tame any kittens, I would suggest you catch those and start that now. Have them spayed/neutered and do not have their ears tipped so they will be adoptable. It will cost a bit more. Here's a list of places in New York State for low cost spay and neuter. It will be quicker for you to look through the list and determine what is closer to you then for me. Once you find one that is close, you can google the name and find their site. Then look at their site for their spay and neuter programs. I did that with the one in Bath, NY (about 1 1/2 hours from you) and the second link is their s/n info.

I have other sites too about how to build a shelter for winter for food or sleeping, how to foster a feral, etc. But, I'm not sure exactly what it is you want help with. Hopefully this is a start.

there is a feral program for spay/neutering i cant afford to pay for all of them myself or i would. trapping is another hurdle i need a trap. Ive had 3 people say oh i have a trap ill bring it to you. none of them showed up. its so darn frustrating. none of these cats asked to be dumped outside abandoned or whatever led them to become what they are now.

Ok, so a good place to start would be with a feral cat organization. Since it's easier for you to look at the sites and tell which is closest to you, this link I gave you should be helpful.
http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/....html#New_York

See if any of the ones closest to you will either loan or rent traps to you. I'm sorry you've had such a frustrating experience with folks that say they will help and then don't come through. I don't know if these folks are with an organization or not as you don't say, but you may be able to get a trapper who is with an organization to work with you to trap them all at once. But will you be able to afford to have them all done at once? Best to start with the females, especially if they are pregnant. Get those done first and quickly unless you want to be taming and placing more kittens soon. With winter coming and where you live (I grew up in the Catskills), raising kittens of a feral or semi-feral cat will be a challenge unless you can lure the mother indoors and keep her there.

For example I found Animal Advocates of the Finger Lakes: Aurora
http://cayugaanimaladvocates.org/

I clicked on 'Spay/Neuter Help' on the right and it took me to this page. There is all kind of low cost help, transport help, etc. It even says at the bottom of the page: "If you are feeding feral cats weâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]d like to know about it."
http://cayugaanimaladvocates.org/?page_id=23

With just a bit of finger work on your computer you should be able to find some help. They also have on the right a 'Helping Cats' link you can click on. It's about feral cats, so it sounds like they might help since they are called Animal Advocates of the Finger Lakes.
http://cayugaanimaladvocates.org/?page_id=10

At the top of the page there is a 'Contact' tab. When you click on that you will see:

Let me add that if you are contacting people that trap all the time in large quantities and you only want to trap one or two, that may be the reason you are finding it difficult to get the help you need. Since resources and time is limited for these folks, they may end up choosing to trap where there are many cats to catch so they have a greater impact. You may find you have to rent or purchase a trap or two yourself if you only intend to do one or two at a time. Most rental centers rent wildlife traps for about $10.00 a day. With feral cats, they are trapped the day before the s/n clinic, they aren't fed that night, brought to clinic in morning to be s/n, picked up in afternoon, kept in trap that night and sometimes the following day and then released. You are looking at a 2 to 3 day rental. Sometimes it's less expensive to just purchase 2 traps. I can give you sites to look at for that if that is what you need to do. Let's see what kind of help you can find first with the sites I gave you.

Hope that helps.

Email REsponse from Feral cat friends:

Call the SPCA. The City gave all its feral cat funding to the SPCA. So residents of the city have to go there.

Also, you are required to do the legwork and ensure they are not owned by anyone in the neighborhood. You can be held liable for trapping and neutering a person's pet. If you see them during the day, they are not really feral cats. Some of them may be pets of neighbors and you have to check at least a couple of blocks in every direction. Take pictures on your phone and go ask around the neighborhood before you trap them.

Good luck.

Hi Jami – Have you tried the Finger Lakes SPCA? Their clinics the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month are open to low-income individuals. (Low-income individuals are those who currently receive public assistance in the form of medicaid, food stamps, HEAP assistance, temporary housing assistance, SSI.) You can call the Shelter at (315) 253-5841 for further information on eligibility, cost, and to sign up for clinic dates.

The CNY Cat Coalition also has a clinic in Cortland on Mondays, I believe. You can call either 289-CATS or 420-SPAY for more information and to make an appt. Leave a msg – someone will call you back. If that doesnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t happen, please let me know!

Thanks for caring about all of these kitties!

A woman in Auburn might be able to transport to SNAP. You should call Janice at SNAP and ask to connect with this woman (Cindy). Snapâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s # is 607-756-2561. You donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t have to go through the Cat Coalition to get an appointment there.

Ive had calls to both SNAP and to SPCA. Even Signed up for the clinic and havent heard back at to what time/day. its like going around in circles!

Colorpointcat, I'm not sure I see 'circles' here, but maybe I'm not reading this right. It seems to me you have to wait to hear back from them as to when there are openings for the s/n clinics and/or availability of traps and transportation. Did I miss something? You have already done the legwork and determined these cats are not owned by anyone as you have been feeding them and caring for them, etc.

What about the SPCA feral program? Did you contact them?

I'm guessing they are overwhelmed. I would say to call and check on the status. We are finding here in the Baltimore and Washington, DC area that many of the s/n clinics for ferals fill up at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance! I realize that is not the best scenario, but it is what it is. Sadly, mommas have babies in the meantime and then there are more to deal with! That's why it's best to get them done first. It's a very frustrating experience sometimes. Recently there was a massive rescue of ferals at a racetrack that closed involving over 200 cats that needed to be removed, s/n and placed on farms, etc. That was quite an effort by all involved!
