Kindle vs. Nook

Has anyone used both, and have a preference?

I know Kindle owners are generally very happy, but I don't know many Nook owners. Does anyone have either the B&W or colour Nook?

I've been looking at the e-readers for a while, and my huge anatomy and physiology textbook is available on the Nook (but not Kindle), so I'm leaning toward for the Nook for that reason.

Can anyone offer any opinions?

I bought a nook back in July. The best thing I like about it (really) is its great to use at the gym which on the Arc trainer or eliptical!

I had the saleperson show me the color Nook and that is awesome. He called it a mini Ipad! But for me it wouldn't be as handy as I need the 3G one for downloading and it doesn't have that option (yet).

There are a couple of website that one can join for a very small fee and be able to download many books plus I believe one can download some books at local libraries as well. I think the software they use is much different from the Kindle.

I find the Nook really easy to use. There are in store specials too like free beverages from a Barnes and Noble Cafe.

I love my Nook. I got it in February for my birthday and have had no problems with it whatsoever. The last few software upgrades have been great (added games, a beta browser, and faster page turns). I also found it very easy to use and so easy on the eyes.

GailC, could you PM me a few sites that you can pay a small fee for books on if you have the sites? Thanks

I have a Sony Reader and I love it. It's a basic black and white reader.

When I bought it the Nook was not out and Sony got the best review.

I have the kindle app for Ipod touch... don't have a real kindle or a nook, but I had to chime in and say how much I love the kindle app... I can listen to my music and read a book at the same time.. it's great for at the gym.

There is a pretty in-depth review by c-net that just came out yesterday, updated with the latest readers and comparing them by their respective price-ranges, or screen size category, or online connection needs, etc - have you read this? It is a good one...

There's a book review blog that I peruse which reviewed the NookColor and found that the interface was a bit slower than the regular Nook, as well as other issues. Their recommendation was to wait for the next generation of that particular one.

However, either the Nook or the Kindle would be great options. B&N is more likely to play by the publisher's rules, which means, unlike what Kindle users had to deal with earlier this year, you probably won't be left without access to top publisher's books.

I think Best Buy is offering all the eReaders in their stores (THINK, not KNOW, lol) so if you want to actually do a side-by-side comparison, I recommend checking out Best Buy.

The nook also has a music player on it so you can read and listen to music if you'd like (I end up too distracted by one or the other )

Sarah, did you see this info about e-textbooks on the B&N site?
Quote:
Technical Requirements
NOOKstudy is supported on the following platforms and operating systems:

* PC: Windows XP, Vista, 7
* Mac: OS X (10.6.x)

Please note: NOOKstudy eTextbooks cannot be read on the NOOK or mobile devices because textbooks do not display well on small screens. Learn more about NOOKstudy at: www.nookstudy.com

Read the eTextbook FAQS
What devices can I read a NOOKstudy eTextbook on?
NOOKstudy eTextbooks purchased from Barnes & Noble are meant to be read on your computer via our NOOKstudy application. You cannot use your NOOK or mobile device to read textbooks as the screens are too small to properly view the contents.

We have a Kindle that we got from Dottie's mom, but if they ever start supplying magazines on the reader, I'll get a color version for sure. Just to be rid of all the magazines all over the house!

One of the ladies at the gym told me about the Free library of Philadelphia. Its a $15 annual fee and there is some software you need to download on your computer before using.
I just read about another site for $9/year the World free library? I can't remember where I read about this. (grrr.....)

Anyhow when I bought mine B&N was doing free classic literature books so that is where the majority of my downloads came from. Hoping I get some b&n ecard gift cards for christmas though.

I have a kindle on my wish list but that's because I have both the kindle and nook app on my phone. Personally I prefer the selection on kindle store vs the nook. The kindle app runs a lot smoother than the nook app. Just from my experiance with the apps I would go with the kindle.

They already supply a few magazines, so I imagine they'll be adding more over time. I just canceled my print subscription to TIME to save paper, too.

I got the Sony Ebook Reader touch version for my birthday earlier this month, and I absolutely love it. I did a lot of research before asking for this model (vs kindle etc.), and based on reviews, memory, supported formats (everything! Works great with .pdf science articles too), I feel we made the right decision.

Not sure how the colour Nooks get around the backlighting/glare problem - but Id like to see one of these in action: as someone mentioned, for magazines alone that could be awesome.

I believe you can see those at Barnes and Noble or Best Buy. I've heard the interface is a bit cludgy, however. *shrug* I'm perfectly happy with my Kindle 2.
