PKD Persian: Question from experience

I would like to ask a few questions regarding PKD (Polycystic Kidney disease) for anyone who has experience in this subject.

My beautiful Persian of 15 years Misty had this disease and a little over a month ago we took the hard descision to put her to sleep following the advice of the vet but I have been troubled ever since that Misty went too early and that maybe we could of done more.

She had lost a little weight, was on and off her food and had began peeing out of her litter tray and drinking excessively a week or so leading up to her being booked into the vets. When we took her in we were told she was very sick and after ultra-sound we were adviced it would be kinder to put her to sleep.

What i would like to know, from anyone with an experienced insight in PKD or maybe even someone with vetenary expertise is really what are the end sign stages of this disease? Would Misty of seen a few more weeks or even months if we'd took her home and medicated her? This was an option the vet gave but didn't recommend it or even press it with us. Would she of been in pain if we'd done this, did we do the right thing?

I hadn't even heard of PKD before all this happened but since have read up extensively online and have clicked every link possible on the subject so i know a fair bit now but What i never read are the end stage details or personal stories.

Although i know PKD is not curable i would hate to think that Misty still had time left and we took that away from her.

Any extra info or help either way would be most appreciated. Thankyou.

Misty was such a special little friend and i miss her every day. Love you Misty-Moo,never forget you x

So sorry for your loss, I don't know the answers to your 'what if' questions but think you just need to make peace with the decision that was made You've done what you and the vet thought was best.

Good breeders now screen for PKD, but I don't know if that was the case 15+ years ago.

PKD is a recent problem in Persians. I'm sure whoever you got her from never tested for it as it was not a well known problem in the breed at the time. I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm sure you made the right decision.

Its never easy to make that decision no matter what the problem. I've lost a few cats that were in the teens (average lifespan) and some from cancers or other problems at a much earlier age.

We recently lost our first Ocicat at only 3 yrs old due to complications from a UTI (which we got him in right away). Some Oci breeders figure it was either a reaction to the meds or an underlying kidney/liver problem that just took him early. Needless to say everyone was shocked and sadden by us losing our cat.

I don't think i'll really come to terms with weather or not it was the right time for Misty, not deep down anyway. Finding more info on PKD's end stages will be the only way i'm truly satified, whatever that answer is. I do take some solace though in the vets advice at the end and that we always only had the best intensions for our dear Misty.

GoldenKitty45 So sorry to hear of the loss of your lovely Oci,especially at such a young age. x

I will continue to search and will be popping back here to check if anyone finds or adds anything new. In the meantime thanks for all the help,it's most appreciated.
