My boyfriend found a stray kitten awhile back and took him in. I work at our local shelter and they will NOT take in cats ANYMORE, there are just too many. Before you guys give me the "if you don't have the money, you shouldn't have the animal speech", know that there is no where for this kitten to go except loose in the front yard.

Anyways, he's been with us for about two months now, and just five minutes ago we were laying on the futon watching a movie and he starts screaming bloody murder. He was running around and his back leg got caught in one of the springs on the futon. We were not moving the futon at the time, he just weaseled himself in a place. After scruffing him and wiggling him out, he's left with a swollen and slightly bleeding leg (boyfriend's hand is much worse off). His leg is definitely not broken, hes playing with a mouse right now.

Is there anything we can do here at home to alleviate the bleeding and swelling?

He needs a vet. If you can't get him to a vet, put him in a small room with a lot of padding on the floor and keep him quiet. If he doesn't get better, or he starts running a fever, becomes lethargic, stops eating- using the litter pan-get him to the vet. Ideally, if you have a large dog carrier, that is where he should go for at least 24 hours- if you don't have that then a small bathroom is best.

Into the bathroom he goes. Thank you for the advise, us jobless cat-lovin' college kids really appreciate it.

Is there a vet at the shelter you work at? If so, ask him/her for advice next time you're there. Co-workers usually help each other out.

Kitties tend to be pretty resilent. With rest, he should be just fine. If he isn't bearing weight on the leg or paw it could be a sprain, or a break, if not he probably just bruised it.

Is there a vet at the shelter you can contact?
