Collecting urine from diabetic cat

Thread Starter
My cat Mojo just got diagnosed as a diabetic and the vet told us we need to start taking urine samples on a regular
basis. Initially we tried something called No-sorb (black plastic pellets). He hated the stuff and just would not go.
Now our vet offered something new called Kit4Cat (www.kit4cat.com). Has anyone heard of this product?
It is supposed to repel the urine to make it easier to collect. We have tried the free-catch method, but it was too difficult.
Any advice or tips on an easy method for collecting urine would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi There and welcome to TCS.

I too have a diabetic cat, actually my second DC. Whenever I have to collect urine, I get "low dust or dust free" aquarium gravel. Preferably the uncolored one. Some people say raw rice, but that just didn't work too well.

Other methods are shredded up plastic bags. Even, regular gravel. Is there a stone quarry where you could buy a bushel?

But the aquarium gravel really worked very well. And very affordable. Hope all goes well with your cat. It is really not as daunting as it may seem. We have a regular regimen here....my cat actually comes to me for his shot. Actually, my Farley V did also. So, take it easy, and try not to worry too much. FD can be controlled and your kitty can live a good life. My Goofy is proof of that.

Just an afterthought....get the smoothest edged gravel you can find. Easier on their pads.

i just had a thought, have you heard of that Tidy Cats Breeze litterbox? it uses nonporous pellets, urine sluices through a grate in the bottom and is absorbed by disposable pads below. your could take the pad out and just catch the pee this way (assuming your cat will go for it). I have one in my house and the cats seem to like it fine so it may be close enough to convince your guy. good luck!

The tidy cats breeze is what I use-I rinse them first then let them dry. The shape is not liked but my cat will use it. I just fill a regular litter pan up with them

The gravel for tanks I have used many times with great results!

When I had to collect urine, my vet suggested popcorn kernals (not popped!).

Clean the litter box and fill with just a single layer of the kernals (it helps to rinse them first and dry them to insure there's no residue that can absorb the urine).

If the cat is willing to use the box this way (my boy did fine), you can get a good sample.

I collected urine samples from Lucas like a year ago and what I did was I cut a magazine (wit glossy non-absorbent pages) into little pieces and Lucas when right in and peed, it was super easy. I collected a whole syringe.
