About 1-2 months ago, one of my daycare parents that lives minutes away told me their cat got out and they hadn't seen it. The live within a mile and a half, its about a 2 minute drive from their house to mine...from their housing development, over a bridge, and into my tiny little town.
Anyway, the dad always talks to me for a few when he drops the baby off...and we talk about cats a lot. They had 4 cats and a dog. He was telling me how the cat got out and described it as a dark orange medium length haired cat with a long tail...kinda similar looking to Toby only a little bigger/darker.
Well about 4 weeks ago, we started seeing an orange cat around our neighborhood. I told him about it and said it might be there cat, and we could catch it. He said that he figured the cat was in someone elses house by now and they weren't looking for it anymore and he didn't think it could get to my area. He basically brushed it off, and so did I for a few days.
Well now this orange cat is around often. I have mentioned it numerous times, each time a brush off. Two nights ago, my husband was able to pick this cat up (we feed strays on our porch, we have two strays that come up to our door for food, we are trying to trap/vet them and find them homes...so we have been feeding the orange one also) and bring it inside to take a picture. I showed the picture to the guy today and he said that the cat pictured looks like a long haired cat and his is short haired.
I am pretty sure he told me his cat was a medium hair at least.....he compared it to my cat which is a med/long haired cat and said the hair was a lot like that. I had told my husband last night that I was sure that if he even said the cat was his, that he wouldn't want it....so now i just have a bad feeling it is his cat and he just doesn't care to get it back into his house.
I don't know what to do. I mean I can't force him to take this cat back, and I guess I can't even guarantee that it is 100% his....but I just have this feeling....I mean, if one of my cats got out I would have posters up, I would drive everyday around looking for it, and go door to door to tell people to bring my cat back if they found it.
Anyway....we are maxed out on kitties, that is why we are feeding them outside and trying to vet/find homes for them. Should we just try to do this with the orange kitty now too? Would you press the issue further with the daycare parent about making sure it isn't their cat? I don't want to create a bad relationship with daycare parents by being pushy but I think it would suck if this was their cat and they just let it stay outside.

I would bring it up as a oh cats been here so cold/sad looking and leave it at that...Last thing I'd want is them taking it if they really dont want cat in house. Is it possible to talk to the wife(maybe he dumped it?) to see if she shows any more interest. Hopefully either way kitty can find a home where its kept inside

At this point, I'd just treat this orange kitty like you do the others. (
!!! ). Orange males are popular around here, making them easier to adopt out.
But whether he's lying or not.... he clearly has NO interest in having their cat back. In fact - if he's lying, it's just even that much sadder, and kitty would be happier somewhere else - and better off!

I'd probably treat the kitty the same as the others, and maybe find him a home if he's friendly. The man doesn't seem to be interested at all in having that cat back, so if he doesn't care, he won't "miss" it anymore than currently if it is rehomed with someone who truly will care for it.

just to play devils advocate for a minute: Maybe he has already explained to his kids that the cat is gone and either found a new home or moved on and doesnt want to explain how the cat came back? Just another thought.

I would take the cat in and try to rehome it and vet it just like you do the others! Good luck!

His only child is 4 months old, so that isn't really an issue. I do agree with previous posts that if he is lying and it is his cat, the cat is better off without him... I posted a "found" ad on Craigslist just in case it is someone elses.
Right now, we have a "cat house" outside that we had someone build us...its a big wooden box basically with a small door for cats, and a lid that lifts so we can add food/water. The floor is covered in hay and a few cheapie throws for warmth, and we have a heating light hooked up to the top of it so it keeps it nice and warm. We are trying to get the cats to sleep in it! They had previously been sleeping in our shed w/ a heating lamp but we are trying to get them out of that habit. Our shed is just a vinyl one so when it is windy/rainy it moves a lot and their food gets spilled and they get spooked and run so we got something more solid. So far two of the three cats will come to us and let us hold them. They have even started poking their noses in our door when we open it....which makes my husband wish we could bring them in but we really cant.

I don't understand either! If one of my cats got out I wouldn't SLEEP, EAT or REST until I did everything in my power to bring my baby home. He obviously doesn't care to have the cat back, so here's hoping the little one can find a great forever home where he is loved and cherished like he SHOULD be.
