I'm picking up a case of Royal Canin SO for my male cat who has struvite crystals. The food claims it will help dissolve crystals and promote urinary health, etc. Does anybody know a ballpark figure for how long it will take to take effect? I'm wondering how long to wait before having another urinalysis.

Did the vet give any recomendations on how long to wait?

I have a cat on c/d(science diet rx) he was getting better with every meal. he never had any tests(dont get me started on that vet...)

The smell he had went away in about 2 days(that very heavy almost unneutered male smell)

Call and ask the vet ... normally from my UTI kids the vet redoes a urinalysis a few days after the antibiotic is finished... Mine are not on RX foods so i cant give an idea on that

With my boy, he had his urine tested a week after his antibiotics were finished. Then a month after we started the diet (Hills CD wet and dry). That result was good, and he has had no problems peeing since theb\
, so at the moment we're doing senior panels every six months which include a urinalysis.

Ask the vet when you should come in for a check-up. And good luck - I know you're probably feeling you've never spent so much time checking a litter box in your life.

Or in the case of a cat who had been peeing on the floor the
"hey hes peeing in the box...Happy pee pee dance"

ha thats exactly how i feel! my cat has bee peeing against the walls ... annoying but it makes urine collection easy. i just have to grab a cup or something in time!

i am growing frustrated with my vet, he is bad about getting back to me so who knows when I will hear from him. But my cat's course sounds similar to darlilli's. His antiobiotics are over and the initial post-test was clean so i thought he would be okay with maintenance. but it started up again so he was tested again and the crystals were back. so i'm trying the SO diet in the hopes it helps. i will see if i can get the vet, otherwise i will shoot for another test in a month.

I think when the cat associates pain (either pee or poo) with the box, and wants to show you something is wrong, you'll get a lot of inappropriate litter box behavior (as they say).

I've been lucky with my vets - it's never been more than 24 hours before I get a call with test results.

Hopefully you'll talk with the vet and get his idea of good times for urine testing - but, again, just me - if your cat shows any discomfort or the amount of pee, or number of pees per day, changes, I'd call and get an urgent appointment that day. These UTI issues can go bad quickly.

BTW, I'm sure your guy has plenty of clean water to drink - but by chance do you have a fountain? I did notice my two drink more from the fountain than they did from traditional bowls.

yes good point, fountains are very handy. i got the pioneer 'rain drop' model a while ago, mostly cuz the cats were starting to line up to drink out of the sink faucet! i have several water bowls but the fountain is #1
