What do you think? Phelps Protest.

Fred Phelps is coming to my town on Tuesday, November 30 to protest where I went to high school.

An excerpt from GodHatesFags.com: "WBC will picket the worthless brats at Mulvane High School who have been taught from the cradle two loud lies, to wit: It's okay to be gay & God loves everyone. Every adult who touched their lives is to blame for their moral compasses being shattered. They told them that they could live like Satan himself and still go to heaven when they die. They told them that lie to justify their own filthy sins, and they did that against their own interests."

A very large group of people are organizing a peaceful counter-protest. I want to go, because I hate Fred Phelps. He makes me sick, and a good friend of mine is gay and is trying to organize a counter-protest and I want to show I support him.

My husband says "Don't go. It's stupid. Counter protesting just plays into them." He in now way agrees with Fred Phelps, he's an atheist and liberal.

I don't want to give the Phelps what they want, but I do want to support my friend. Is counter-protesting a stupid idea? Should we ignore them?

I pretty much agree with your husband. If everyone ignored them, they would probably go away. They want the attention.

If you go take a baseball bat.

There is a case before the US Supreme Court about those idiots.

As far as I'm concerned what they do is nothing more than hate speech, but an appeals court previously ruled that what they have been doing is protected by the First Amendment.

Yeah, they're pretty disgusting. I ashamed they're from Kansas.

Ignore. The press should also ignore (but they won't).

They were here the other day. Counter-protests were held as well. I only saw it on the news, I didn't even know anything was going on. I think everyone should just ignore them. It's no fun to be a jerk if nobody's watching.

The problem is that the press won't ignore them. And they shouldn't be the only ones who have a voice in the news.

People are going to counter-protest anyway, so i would want to add my voice and my body to that crowd that's protesting what that awful man is doing, because he has the freedom of speech.

Ideally you ignore them and they go away - but that's not what's happening. Support your friend. That's what I'd do.

Here the news had to explain cause they left when one place had more counter protesters...

I think the most effective counter protest so far was the one at Comi-con, it was hilarious. The news was more interested in the funny signs the counter protesters were carrying, like Bender's "Kill all humans" and "Magnets! How the %^*& do they work?" and such things.

They thrive on conflict, but lighthearted ridicule and not taking them seriously at all just seemed to pull all the wind out of their sails.

I never wanted to be at Comicon more in my LIFE! I'm a Christian minister myself, yet also considered on the fringe because of my own sexuality. Add to that my love of sci-fi and fantasy...

As for the one in Kansas, I'd make signs to poke fun at them. Don't be mean, that only stokes their fires... but poke a little fun, be peaceful, and show your support. the WBC are a bunch of twits who don't really 'get' what Jesus was about.

Can I have a dragon for Christmas? Then I can send him over to the WBC and have a little fun of my own... if they come back to Oregon, I'll be waiting...

The protested here at a fallen soldier's funeral on Friday. Fortunately the protest permit was granted for a couple of blocks away from the funeral home at and at intersection that the processional would not go through. These people serve Satan well- convincing others that they somehow represent Christianity. I probably would not show up for a protest at a school. At a funeral I would want to line up to block them from the view of family and friends of the deceased.
