Oral to remove a the tooth that absessed, its broken all the way down into the gum, and to remove a wisdom tooth. They have to get rid of this infection first and they have given me to antibitotics for that. The dentist also gave me loratabs for the pain and told me to alternate it with my meds for my shoulder. This is the first time I have been to the dentist since I was about 12 so he said once this is taken care of he wants me back in there. He said they will put me to sleep during the surgery. And they also said that I have to have someone drive me, and I told my dad that when I got home and he refused to drive me he stated that he had two teeth removed and he drove hisself and that I could too. So my neighbor is going to drive me and I am going to stay with them that night as he will not keep an eye on me for the night he says there is no reason to. So I am really scared I have never had any kind of surgery and never had a stay in the hospital. I mean when I was little dad never took me to the doctor so I am a bit afraid of them. Does anyone know what I should expect with this?

If the pains that bad, RELIEF. My mom just had something similar done but her tooth had broke years ago(we are the type to wait till your on ground in pain before thinking hey a dr may be a ok choice at the moment.)

She was awake but totaly numbed out(was afraid she would feel something cause I think that had happened in last visit years back-dr started before all had taken affect.) She may have been awake cause of her many other med issues didnt ask much. She has a few good more trips back before its all over

I expect that you will feel much better when it is done. Let them help you through it and do follow up with what needs to be taken care of in the future. We only have one set of teeth and our oral health can affect our whole body!

I'm sorry your dad is so unsupportive. However, I am glad your neighbor will be there for you. Let her spoil you!

Good luck!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Gary just recently went through something like this - and his pain was unbelievable. He had to do the antibiotics first too.

He is terrified of dentists, he is terrified of surgery - he's terrified of it all (except the pain LOL). I'm so sorry your dad is being so unsupportive, but this is not just having a tooth removed.
That said, the anesthetics they use are advanced beyond anything he'd know about - but you do need watching, because everyone reacts differently.

The antibiotics alone should probably help your mouth feel a little better - though if you're like Gary, they zap your energy - but you MUST take them so that when they do the surgery they won't spread the infection.

The surgery shouldn't take long - and it's better to be out for it, cuz then you're just nervous about it, not during it.
And you'll be loopey for a little while afterwards, so it's a really good thing your neighbor will be driving.
You'll probably need to rest for at least the next day. It took Gary three days to really feel better. And FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS they give you - you'll have to rinse your mouth every few hours with warm salt water. This will help keep it clean and heal much faster!

We went without dental for a long time. My Dh had to have several bad teeth removed. A few of them were abcessed. He is terrified of dentists. Afterward he said it was such a relief not to live with the pain. He felt so much better.

I had about the same thing done in Feb. I had a broken tooth and 4 wisdom teeth out and had to do a round and a half of antibiotics before they could do the surgery. (I say around and a half because half way through I found out I was allergic to penicillin by being a giant rash!!) I absolutely do not remember anything after going into the office that morning until the next day....
Make sure you stock up on soft foods! It took me about 3 days before I could do anything too solid. I ate mostly pudding and mashed potatoes!
And yeah you do need watching at least that first night. I didnt have any problems, but Garys sis had a very bad reaction and was throwing up about every 10 minutes when she had hers out!

Good luck and dont worry! Things will get better!

And I feel your pain, I am going to the dentist for the first time since about 12 tomorrow morning and I am a wreck!!

Sorry your dad is being so unsupportive

I have to get my wisdom teeth out eventually, as they're pretty much impacted, but as long as they dont bother me, I refuse to go do it. All of last week one of them felt like it was trying to break through more of my gum and bothered me, but not enough to schedule an appointment - I HATE going to the dentist. I also broke a chunk off a tooth earlier this year, but they're not in any rush to fix it.

Hope all goes well for you!

FYI. Sometimes, but rarely, an alternative suggestion is given by doctors, which is: You can hire a nurse to escort you home. This is a rare suggestion - Usually for folks who do not have family in the area, or they have no friends/support system (even rarer). Or for special surgeries - for example if they're having cosmetic surgery but wish to keep it secret from family/friends. As I was told, hiring a nurse in lieu of family/friend driver is legal in the City of New York, but as for other states, I don't know. As for what you dad said, well, I was told: After some surgeries, it is illegal to leave the treatment facility by yourself. In other words, depending on the surgery, you are required by law to leave with another person who is of sound mind and body... in a nutshell because they will not be groggy, and you still will be.

I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed. It's been a number of years ago, I remember they had me count backwards from 100 when they put me under and I think I got to about 97. The ride home was very vague and you would never be able to drive safely after such a procedure, assuming you could drive at all.

Be sure to have plenty of broth on hand for when you get hungry afterward. IMHO, it would be better to strain some broth from chicken noodle soup than to drink chicken broth, as it is somewhat greasy and could upset your stomach.

Expect some facial swelling. They should give you instructions on how to relieve this; and I did have some bleeding when I first removed my packing. It scared me, but it was normal. Take care to follow their post-op instructions precisely.

If you are too anxious, you could always ask your oral surgeon to call in something for anxiety to take the night before surgery. Some doctors won't do this, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thank you all for your support, I don't know what I would do without tcs. And I am glad my neighbor said she would or I would have been in a bad spot because most of my friends are working or unable and my dad and sister is unwilling. When I told my sister about the surgery she said that will teach you to take better care of your teeth, even though she knows I just rescently got insurrance and dad took us one time our entire childhood to the dentist, and the trouble with my teeth was caused by a pecan breaking one and the other being the wisdom tooth. I do appreciate all of the advice and help

Everyone has cover everything else. But there is one thing not mentioned, yet. Since you're on a pain med and will have surgery and more pain meds, you might end up constipated from them.

Good Luck Sweetie. You'll feel better for sure after it's all over. I'm so glad you have decent neighbors watching out for you since your family DOES NOT. Let us know how it goes

I know everything will go well and you will be out of pain. It's a shame tho about your
Dad not being supportive. Good luck to you.

Sounds like you are getting IV sedation, in which case you absolutely cannot drive, what the heck is your dad thinking? (No offense, but come on...) You will be sleepy and loopy for at least a day.

I've had two oral surgeries since July, one to remove a healthy molar that I cracked (evidently I clench my teeth with about 900 lbs. of force at night when I'm stressed
), and the wisdom tooth next to it had to be removed in order to have a post for the fake molar to be put in. Drilling the titanium post into my jawbone was the second surgery.

You really have to take care of yourself, don't eat puddings and milkshakes afterwards like they tell you to, your body needs nourishment to heal. My advice is to eat soups, smoothies (no straws!), soft fruit, hot cereals; leave off the refined sugars which interfere with your immune system and healing.

It's not so bad, just allow yourself time to heal.

But don't spit after rinsing your mouth, you have to let it dribble out or you will disturb the healing at the site and be at risk for dry socket, which is very bad and painful.

Unless you are on antibiotics that cause diarrhea, then it evens out.

Maybe I should keep my big mouth shut, but shame on your Dad and your sister! I can't imagine family acting that way.

Gail, you'll feel so much better when this is all over with. I've never had my wisdom teeth out because I never had any to begin with (apparently, I'm an anomoly) but my daughter did. Her pain afterwards was minimal and she slept most of the day. I hope you come thru everything as easily. Sending lots of healing and calming your way.
