why double sinks?

Thread Starter
Not the most pressing issue of the day I know but - my DH and I watch a lot of those house buying/reno shows, and people seem to be obsessed about having two sinks in their bathrooms. Why? I can understand the usefulness of having a double sink in the kitchen, and actually wish we had one still, but I cannot see us ever having two bathroom sinks. To me it just means more work to keep clean, and it takes up more counter space.

What do people here think?
Does anyone here have a double sink bathroom or would you want to?

No I don't have a double sink in my bathroom, only in the kitchen. I can see the use of having two sinks in the bathroom if you and hubby work and need to get ready at the same time. Two sinks would make things a lot easier but yes it would be more cleaning to do.

Our floor plan came with double sinks in the master bathroom. We had them "delete" one and just keep it a counter.

We have a double sink in our Master Bathroom, and it's very helpful when we're getting ready to go somewhere because we can both be brushing our teeth at the same time, both wash our hands and faces at the same time, etc.

I don't know, we've had double sinks almost every where we've ever lived, so are just used to it. Now that I think about it, our very first house only had a single sink, and it was a small nuisance waiting to spit out a mouth full of toothpaste when the other person's head was in the sink doing the same

As far as cleaning up, it's not that much extra work, for me anyway, to run my sponge around the extra sink and faucet and then rinse and dry them. I'd rather have it than not!

having a double sink was super handy. Besides the reasons mentioned already, if you ever hand wash stuff its nice to still have a sink in the bathroom. random huh? I hand wash a lot of my sweaters and dresses so it was a big plus for me.
Also when you have a cat sleeping in the sink, you can still wash your hands or brush your teeth!
Now we just have a small one and its annoying....esp when there is a cat sleeping in it....

Never have seen it personally but on tv ya. Seems to be a step up and almost"trick" the buyer into spending more for the luxury.
Neither one of my bathrooms could handle a double. its a prison cell bathroom set up-toilet sink to right long ways in front of both a tub. a bit more roomy upstairs(1/2 foot) and same thing.

But then again I would rather have the bedrooms be bigger No kitties in the bathroom anymore-have a few cages should I get anymore and need to seperate(oh no please if I get one let it have a suitcase of money as its only baggage lmao!!!)

It would be very useful for me with 3 kids and hubby all wnatin the bathroom at the same time But I think they are more suited to very large houses, it would look stupid in my bathroom, an extra bathroom or toilet would suit me better. I used to have a double sink at my old house in my kitchen and I really missed it at first but now I have a dishwasher I hardly use my sink x

Two sinks in our main bathroom, one in the ensuite. I'd never have held out for two sinks, but there certainly have been times when it was useful -- particularly as someone said when hand-washing delicates.
If you are not living alone double sinks can help any relationship in theory. It is nice for people not to have to patiently or not so patiently wait just to brush teeth, wash hands, shave, hand wash delicates, or whatever else you can use a bathroom sink for.

I have no idea. We have double sinks in our master bathroom and we only ever use one. LOL We mostly brush our teeth in the shower, but when we don't we still share the same sink even when we are brushing at the same time. LOL

We bought a home with double sinks when we first got married, then moved into a house with a single sink. I hated the single sink after getting used to 2 of them. My current house once again has double sinks and when we remodel that room, we will put 2 sinks back into that room.

I like them for all of the above, plus the fact that DH leaves shaving hairs in his sink. When we shared a sink, I'd have to wash out the sink every time I wanted to use it cause he left it disgusting. And no, there is no retraining the man. He doesn't notice dirt until it's thick enough to support major agriculture.

We have double sinks both in the master bath and the guest bath. DH uses the master bath and I use the guest bath, so we sure don't need 4 sinks between us. The only thing I can think they can be used for is a nice sleeping place for kitty - but neither of our two are sink sleepers

I guess if you had only 1 bathroom and both people were always getting ready at the same time, a double sink would come in handy. Each having their own space.

However, when I'm in the bathroom getting ready, I don't want to be tripping over someone else. So I'd either put in another bathroom or make the other person use the gas station bathroom at the end of the street!

I dont have a double sink in the bathroom but on the weekends it would be handy when we are both trying to get ready at the same time, especially when BF is shaving and I want to brush my teeth. Other than that I dont really see the point in having two sinks in the bathroom....Now the kitchen...how in the world people live with just one sink in the kitchen without a dishwasher...they are crazy..I could never do that it would drive me up a wall and straight to the looney bin.

We don't have double sinks in the bathroom and, at this point, I don't see the need. It's just DH and me. I would love to have more counter space in the bathroom though.

We have double sinks in both bathrooms. Since it is just the 2 of us, hubs uses the hall bathroom because neither room has enough drawers. The master bath also has a huge tub, which both of us feel is a waste, so when we can afford it, the tub is coming out, and we are adding more storage and counter top.

But speaking of sinks, I would also like to replace my double porcelain kitchen sink with a one bowl stainless. I really don't see the purpose of a double sink when you have a dishwasher. I'd rather have a larger sink for cleaning up roasting pans and other large items.

I've never understood the double sinks in the bathroom, either, especially if it's just one person living there. I've seen people insist on the double sinks for one person... that's just weird.

We're 3 people with 1 bathroom (one sink) and we don't have any problems with timing. A 2nd toilet is more necessary imo, if your family has ever had food poisoning or a stomach virus going around, you know what I mean!

Hmm, I can totally understand the use of having an extra toilet!
For me & DH though we get by just fine with one sink in our one bathroom. Although he has the nasty habit of shaving and not cleaning up all his hair too. It's very annoying, but he does try to clean it up now at least.
love the idea of getting an extra sink just for kitties to sleep in!

We've got a double sink in our bathroom, but the bathroom is so small that we hardly ever use it at the same time, and we've got another half-bath anyway. The only time it's useful is when washing stuff by hand.
We only have 1 in our bathroom and we don't really need 2. We don't get ready in the morning at the same time, so 1 works well for us!
I would kill for a double sink in our bathroom. Ok, maybe not kill, but I'd certainly give a lot. It's definitely something we want if/when we buy a house.

The husband and I often have to fight for sink space in the morning and evening, so 2 sinks would eliminate a lot of stressful rushing through morning and evening routines. The husband also takes 50 billion years to shave, and can tie up the sink for hours on end, so if I ever want to do anything during that time, I have to shove him aside. Not fun.

Our bathroom is split into 2 rooms. DH's sink is in the area with the commode and the tub/shower. Mine is in a small adjacent room with the linnen closet. Our bathroom isn't huge; but laid out pretty well.

I do love it because we can each do our dressing without being in the other ones way. Plus having the room separated like that we can have one mirror fog free. There has been a lot less toothpaste on the floor since we bought this house! LOL!

Our master bathroom is pretty huge, and DH and I carpool to work so we're always getting ready at the same time. It has been bliss having his and her sinks, lol.

It's not important to me but I'm single. What I DO require is a sink that has a FLAT "surround" (?) so you can lay items on it, e.g. a tube of toothpaste. My bathroom sink is part of a cabinet and the top (the surround, or surface - I don't know what it's called) looks like granite.(?)

The worst type of sink for me would be one where there's no area to lay stuff, e.g. a pedestal sink with a rounded brim. Ugghhh. That's so not me.

I agree. Why do builders or anyone else put in pedestal sinks? They are worthless.
I love the double sinks. I perch on the edge of "mine" while putting on makeup, while DH brushes his teeth. Then when he's finished, I brush my teeth in his sink. True, I never turn on the water in my sink except when cleaning it, but it would be hard to manage without it. Initially, the plan was that we'd each have a place to brush our teeth, etc., when we're getting ready at the same time. But I just have to be different....

I say it's "style over substance." I like both together whenever possible, but in my world, substance "wins" if it's either-or.
