full moon?

okay, so last night my cat did something crazy that i have never, ever seen her do. it terrified me! last night, there also happened to be a "moondog." the moon looked full and had this glow around it, and my friend had said that it was called a "moondog."

first, some background on my kitty. she is 3 years old and has always been slightly aggressive to strangers. it took her a very long time before she would even warm up to my boyfriend. she is the most affectionate toward me. most people are afraid of her because when they try to pet or hold her, she bites or scratches them. i just tell everyone to avoid her because she likes it that way.

anyhow, last night, my boyfriend's niece was playing with an acoustic guitar. she is 8 years old and already hates my cat for scratching her before. well, i don't know if they sound of the guitar made my cat angry, but she mauled her arm out of nowhere. when she gets up and runs away, my cat turns to my boyfriend's dad and gives a low meow with her ears back. she then follows my boyfriend's niece and is attacking, like jumping up and scratching her. even with us screaming, she didn't seem to back away from her. luckily my boyfriend's niece was wearing pants or my cat would have got her legs. the back on her arm was scratched up pretty bad.

i was so frightened. i have NEVER seen her act like that before. i've seen her scratch or hiss, but that is usually if someone is bothering her or making her uncomfortable. she was acting normal, and then after a few minutes of strumming the guitar, she reacted violently. and continued even after she put the guitar down to escape her attack. i am still in shock with the way she acted.

so... my question... could this be in relation with a full moon? or something else? any advice would be helpful. thanks!

Maybe it was a reaction to the noise of the guitar? Maybe the sound scared your cat?

well i thought that might be the case too. but she just kept attacking even after the strumming stopped. so i don't know if she felt threatened by my niece because she was playing it? i tried to recreate the scene and play the guitar next to her. she looked curious, but did nothing.

It could just be because of who it was. When I was young, 6 or 7, I used to go to my aunt and uncles where they had four cats. Being so young, I was obviously more rough than I should have been with the cats when I pet or tried to hold them (except their 20 lb tub, Buddy, who loved me). Well, one day my uncle and I were playing foosball in the basement, and their oldest cat was lounging on the couch down there. All of a sudden, after I slammed a ball in the "net," the cat lunged at me and started trying to scratch and bite me. Neither of us had been even looking at her, and we were both making the same amount of racket for a good 20 minutes beforehand. The way I see it is the cat had something against me already since I was an annoying, loud presence in her serene world, so even if you and your neice did the same thing at the same time, it was a combination of the noise/action of playing guitar AND who was doing it. My uncle could have played foosball until his hands fell off, or even started a one-man-band down there, and that cat wouldn't have even batted an eye.

Maybe the cat really didn't like the song she was playing.

While a lot of cats are "lunatics" (ours doesn't sleep when the moon is full and even howls), that sounds more like aggression towards kids. Some cats are made uneasy by children, or are even jealous of the attention they get.
