I am coming down with something and have two bad asthma attacks in the past couple of days. I can't seem to stop coughing. My inhaler is empty and I have no cough medicine in the house. So I decided to take matters into my own hands. I have some vanilla that a friend brought me as a gift from Honduras...where they are known for their vanilla. I can't read the label because its in Spanish (except I saw the word "alcohol") so I took a teaspoon (or maybe it was a tablespoon) of it. It calmed my cough for a few hours and I felt pretty good. Then I started coughing all over again. So I decided to mix some up more (about 1/4 of a cup) with sugar and drink that. It was so awful (the sugar made it nasty) that I couldn't finish it all. Soon, I started to notice that I felt kind of funny. I am a complete nondrinker; I use alcohol for cooking purposes only. I watched Ice Road Truckers in a daze. Now I feel sick and dizzy, but my cough is still gone. Surely, that little bit of alcohol couldn't have made me tipsy, could it? I just want to go to bed.

Oh no, I'm sorry you're feeling so sick and have a bad cough! I hope you can get real medicine and get better soon!!

That said, yeah, if you don't drink alcohol, 1/4 cup of vanilla extract would probably get you buzzed. That's 2 oz, a bit more than a shot which is 1.5 oz, and typical vanilla extract is about as stong as any hard liquor- 70-80 proof.

Try to drink some water if you can, so you don't get too ill or dehydrated.

And again- feel better soon!!

To help soothe your cough, suck on hard candy or try this icky tasting concoction that won't give you a buzz. To one mug of water, add 1 T lemon juice, 1 T honey, and 1 T apple cider vinegar. Warm in the microwave and sip on it periodically.

Wonder what that would be like with 1/4 cup brandy, bourbon or rum??? Might work better!

But then she'd be even more tipsy!!

Once when I was sick with a horrible cold at my old job (the office was kind of a home office type thing, attached to my boss's house), we quit work early and went downstairs, and he made me a hot toddy, with lemon, honey, and whisky. It made me feel better, at least for a little while.

Thanks all. I ended up getting very sick on my stomach about 5 minutes after I posted the thread. Brushed my teeth immediately, got sick again, brushed my teeth again.
I wouldn't recommend my desperate remedy to anyone, but the amazing thing is, my cough hasn't returned. I still feel like I am coming down with something rough (just in the time for vacation), but at least I've stopped coughing.

Thank you, I would love to borrow Emmy! My cats aren't doing to much in the nursing department at this time; I think perhaps their little union is on strike!
I got sick again today and now I'm worried about Thanksgiving...and my trip to see the Rockettes.

I'm pretty sure I'd rather cough than puke, but to each their own
I hope you feel better! I can't imagine drinking all that vanilla extract. Maybe try some nice Navan vanilla liqueur instead! I don't know if it will help with your cough or not, but you might not care at that point.

And I spoke too soon about my cats not giving me good nursing care. Last night, Daisy slept right up next to me, something she rarely does. I put my arm around her and kept waking up thinking what the heck is this?
