As some of you know Lynxx has been having a lot of trouble adjusting to the kittens. He has pulled his fur out, he's lost a lot of weight, he barely ate anything from August on until last week when he stopped eating completely. He is repulsed by food. He smells it and dry heaves. He's 9 years old was an only cat for 9 years until these kittens showed up. He is friendly still to my mother, but not so much to me or my father.

We took him to the vet today she told us that he now has Hypatic Lipidosis (idk if i spelled that right) anyway it has to do with liver failure. Also she told us she doesn't believe the kittens caused this. She thinks he has intestinal cancer.

Lynxx is scheduled to have an ultra sound Tuesday to find out for sure. But she said he wouldn't have dropped so much weight even by starving himself, he still wouldn't have dropped that amount of weight. That's why she thinks he has cancer. She thinks he may have had this for awhile, and it just happened to really kick in on him the same time as the new kittens.

I don't know if this is a sign of cancer? but Lynxx always threw up alot over the past couple of years, sometimes at least once a month. We always thought it was something wrong with his food and changed his food. His original vet was never able to explain why he threw up a lot. He thought it was due to allergies.

Also I don't know if this is a sign of cancer? but Lynxx would have food in his dish, and he'd begin knocking things down (which is how he'd tell us he wants more food, he did that as a kitten) so we'd get him new food. He would take a few bites of it and run away. He did that a lot in the middle of the night.

I just left the vet crying, feeling like I'm going to throw up. Lynxx is my best friend. I don't want to lose him, I need him. I have friends and family members that have had cats get cancer before, and none of them ever survived, even the ones who went through treatment still died in the end.

You did take him off the prozac, right? If not, PLEASE call the vet ASAP to discuss this!!!!

I'm so sorry he may have intestinal cancer. Whether he'll survive or not depends upon how far advanced the cancer is (if it is indeed cancer) and how far advanced the problem with the hepatic lipidosis is.

Here is information on hepatic lipidosis:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...lipidosis.html
http://cats.about.com/cs/healthissues/a/fatty_liver.htm

If it's advanced, I am really surprised the vet didn't keep him to tube feed him. Did they stress HOW important it is to get him to eat? Did they provide suggestions as to how?

Here is some basic information on cat cancer:

http://www.cat-health-guide.org/catcancer.html

I don't know what has caused the vet to believe he has intestinal cancer - perhaps she felt a mass during the exam.

No matter what the problem is, both or either require immediate and aggressive treatment.

for Lynxx.

I 2nd the things LDG said. Is Lynxx still at the Vet, being fed thru a tube by them? HL is very serious just in itself, and he must be receiving sustenance someway immediately. Perhaps you are forcefeeding him now (via a needleless syringe with watered down food?)

My Bashful had HL many years ago, and had a feeding tube installed directly into his tummy through which we fed him every few hours for several months until he could eat again.

for your Lynxx. Do keep us posted.

The vet didn't say anything about the Prozac. I can't call now their closed. I will call her tomorrow. She see's Lynxx again on Tuesday.

While we were there, she did give him something under his skin, some kind of fluids to help him. She also gave us a pill to give Lynxx twice a day that she said help him become hungry.

So far Lynxx hasn't eaten on his own. My mother has been force feeding him through a dropper we have, while I hold him still.

Thank you for the websites.

As we discussed in another thread, the prozac can cause a loss of appetite. So as he is now experiencing HL - and was already having problems eating - I am amazed that she prescribed prozac in the first place, and that now, knowing he's got fatty liver disease, she did not discuss how to titrate him down off the prozac!!!!!!!

I just left her a message on her voice mail asking her what to do about the Prozac.

Right now, Lynxx is getting his ultra sound done. We'll find out the results if it is cancer tomorrow.

We had to leave Lynxx off for the day. They did the ultra sound. We picked him up right before they closed. He hates going to the vet, he hates it more when we leave him there. Surprisingly he came home in better shape than Midnight. He even walked into my room for a little while which he's been avoiding since the kittens came back in August. I thought maybe he'd jump up on the bed, but he didn't. He used to sleep in there at night with me in the winter months. He never stayed with me in the Summer months because he's afraid of ceiling fans, and the a/c. Summers are rough for him.

Midnight got to go with him, because the vet tech reapplied his Soft Paws for us. They were very busy today, so they did them through out the day. That's why he had to spend the day there. He has a rough time going to the vet to. He shivers and shakes. Lynxx hates going to the vets, but he doesn't shiver and shake the whole time like Midnight does. Midnight relaxes in the exam room though, and he doesn't mind the vet, he even lets her hold him and pat him.

While we were there picking them up. We saw a couple coming out of the exam room. I don't know if they had a cat or dog, but they were both crying.

Also on the way out I made my father get us out of there as quickly as he could. This other couply was crying and saying good bye to their cat. I don't know what was wrong with him. I just heard as we passed by that they had to put him to sleep. When I got in the car I started crying because I know that's what's eventually going to happen to Lynxx.

The only good thing about seeing those 2 couples crying was I was able to prove to my father I'm not the only 1 who cries when something bad happens to their cat. He gets mad at me every time we take Lynxx to the vets because I keep crying, and I have to keep pointing out to him that I'm not the first person and certainly won't be the last person the vet has seen crying over their pet in the exam room.

I want to know the results of the ultra sound tomorrow, I also don't want to know. All I know is I don't want to lose Lynxx.

Oh, honey, I feel so bad for you. I know just what you are going through. I've been there. More than once.

Try not to let your fears run away with you. You don't know yet. It's so very hard, though.

Turn off the ceiling fan and the a/c. Which if you have going now, is pretty odd to me since it is below freezing in northeastern Illinois where I am. Hold Lynxx close tonight and tell him how much you love him and are there for him.

You can get through this, and you will.

I'm hoping for the best for both of you. But whatever the outcome, you will get through this, and Lynxx will NEVER leave you - come what may.

Right now I'm going crazy just waiting for the vet to call. I don't want to be the 1 to take the call. I know I'll just break down on the phone and won't even be able to pay attention to what she's saying. My father is going to call her if she doesn't call us soon.
