The last few weeks, Rob and I have been going to turkey shoots, mostly for fun to play with our new Marlin 36" barrel bolt action 12ga goose gun, and see if luck is on our side for winning a turkey.

Tonight, it was
I went up for the first round, and my number got called with another number to have a shoot off because it was too close to call a winner. The guy I was against got all smug, and his wife/gf had a grin on her face after we shot. The judge called my number as the winner, and I think their jaws fell to the floor
One of the guys waiting in line to buy a ticket said he was rooting for me and was glad I got it. So now I don't just show the guys up at the dragstrip, I do it shooting, also! Was so excited - I was actually going to buy my turkey for Thanksgiving tomorrow, but I won one instead!
Felt even better to win one wearing my Jersey Girl hoodie and cute fuzzy boots, since most of the people there were dressed in their southern camo clothes and are "brought up shooting."

I had a few more pretty close shots, and a few where I missed the target completely
Rob got called for a shoot out also but didn't get the turkey. Every time my BIL, FIL, or Rob made fun of me for missing the target or not doing well on a round, I just showed them my winning target and asked if they had one yet

I weighed the turkey when I got home - just over 13lbs
People at the turkey shoot started fearing our gun when we'd go up, they'd be like "oh crap, I don't want to be against that long gun!" and "That's the winner gun right there!" (Even though there was a guy who won THREE turkeys tonight!)

A picture Rob took after we got home:

Love how you wiped the smirks off their faces!
Umm, holy smokes, just how long is that gun?!! Or are you really short?

That gun is ~57" from stock to tip of the barrel. I'm 63" tall
If I set it down on the floor and I'm barefoot, it comes up to my ear.

The barrel itself is 3ft long. Makes a great turkey shoot gun, because it has such a small recoil, and is so long we joke we can just reach out and tap the target! (Really cant, its quite far away!) Our other 2 shotguns have 18" barrels with a much harder recoil. We got this one mainly for a turkey shoot gun, and a conversation piece (because it is also a bolt action shotgun).

Oh, and my turkey cost me $2
(It's $2/shot)

Edit: Just realized there's two glowing orbs in the corner of the pic ... gonna have to go ahead and guess that's Nero's eyes, because when Rob was trying to take the picture he was climbing on my leg - Nero loves to be in pictures with Meowmy

Before I ever think of talking down a woman, I remember the old observation:

"Gene Kelly was a great dancer. But Ginger Rogers did all the same steps, in high heels, dancing backwards."

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
HA HA HA HA that'll show them! CONGRATS! That's fabulous!

That is one loooooooong gun, girl! We were out shooting at the range a couple of weeks ago. We took the Roberts .243 (bolt action) (among others) - and all the instructors wanted to give it a try because they hadn't used one. I got the feeling that basically it's great gun if you want to go hunt trucks or something.
But it's hard for me to handle - and the barrel is nothing like that long!

The turkey WILL taste better - and not just because it was free, but because you WON it and earned it!
WTG!!!!!

I told the hubby I felt like I was the "hunter woman" who went out and provided for the family with a catch
I'm excited to cook my winnings, and ready for the next one! My friend is having a turkey shoot at her house the day after Thanksgiving, maybe I can win myself a Christmas turkey too!

We used to use our Mossberg 500 shotguns, but they only have 18" barrels and A LOT more recoil! Never had a bolt action gun before, I find it to be pretty cool and gets a lot of attention! Hubby said our gun was manufactured somewhere in the 60s-70s. He's cleaning it now.

Love that quote!

I'm sure the turkey will taste extra good because you won it.
