Okay so my housecat, Diesel has been starting to go bald around her tail area and I'm really worried. She started to get bald spots by her tail about a month ago and now it started to spread up her back and down her tail. There hasn't really been much change in her behavior except that she doesn't like to have the bald spots touched. My mom says it is mange, but I don't know. Could someone please just tell me if you have any idea what is. She is 1 year old and doesn't go outside, but she has been in our basement before we realized that we had a rat problem down there. Thank you to anyone who can help.

Without seeing a picture, it is hard to diagnose anything. Does yuor cat grrom a lot? Sometimes bald patches occur in an overgroomed area. If not, it could be any number of skin diseases that cause hair loss. only a vet can tell you for sure what you're dealing with, as fur-covered animals going bald is never a good thing.

Mange isn't particularly common in cats. When a cat does get mange it's related to a poor immune system not being able to keep the mite under control. If this was the case you'd have an ill cat.

You're likely seeing one of two things: An allergy or overgrooming in response to another factor.
Less common, but still possible is a bacterial skin infection, though that can set in secondary to the two above problems. Only a vet can diagnose and treat this issue.

It could also be stress. Has there been any changes in your home recently? Anything that could possibly be stressing her out? A vet is always the best choice.
Better to be safe rather than sorry. Good luck!

That happened to Lynxx 3 different times. Now he's losing fur because he's stressed because of the kittens. The 2 times it happened before we never found out why, and we did take him to the vet. Back then he shouldn't have had any stress. He lost fur on his tail and 1/2 way up his back, but it did grow back, took a long time.

Maybe an allergy to something? Did you add anything new in your house?

I notice the cats I have taken in with fleas have this-either down sides if its a bit overweight or on the tail from base to few inches down and up.

do you see any fleas/black flecks(flea dirt) Dont use any hartz/cheap spot ons as tempting as it may seem go with advantage or something vet sells you
