Hello! I would like to ask your opinion about my cat. He is an older cat, he adopted us a few years ago and we've had him ever since. We think he is in between 8-10 years old. This week he is leaking a brown liquid from his butt, if he sits in the floor he leaves a puddle, he laid in my husbands lap last night and got it all over him. He has had diarrhea on and off the past couple months (and we feed good quality food to our cats), but never the leaking issue that we have this week. If he jumps down from something it just comes out all over the place when he hits the floor.
I know this will more than likely be a vet issue, but my husband and I both work at the same place and they are closing the doors so we're about to be out of a job, and would like any input you may have or if you've seen this before. I will take him anyway if this doesn't stop. I can't until Saturday so in the mean time would like to help him. I study the drops when I clean it up, it looks like brown gravy, and sometimes has a few tiny particles in it that look like coffee grounds or flea dirt..but not enough to think it would be old blood. Thanks for reading!!!

It's likely from having untreated diarrhea for so long. Your cat really does need to see the vet for this, there's just no way around it or to "fix" this yourself.

You said you two feed a good food? Even the most expensive of foods don't guarantee that every cat can eat them. I have one that can't have chicken in foods, no matter how great those chicken containing brands are - otherwise he gets very loose stinky diarrhea.

So if your vet can rule out other causes of this diarrhea you may find yourselves trying different foods (with your vet's guidance).

In the meantime you can offer him a probiotic like bene-bac, but I don't think it will do much. Some may suggest canned pumpkin (not the pie filling, just pumpkin) for fiber, BUT since we don't know what the underlying cause is I really don't think it's a good idea. Some medical conditions actually need low fiber.

Thank you for your advice. For sure, this is something I've never seen before. I have had many cats in my life too..but I will get him to the vet.

Well, consider it a good thing that you've never seen it before. I have some "firsts" in my house, too. lol

I hope the vet is able to help solve this soon.
