Just to add if you do download from a site and then upload it to your server and post the photo you should always give the source credit. When I post something, like a cat condo for example, i try to make sure to put a link to where the photo came from, that way people will know who actually made the condo.

Oh boy...I hope the Photoshopping Zoey thread is cool! I understand that if you alter a graphic more than 20% it is not considered copyright infringement...

I don't have time to go through and read all the pages here, I wish I did, but bottom line question for me.....this is what I do (which isn't often) If I want to copy a pic from a website...I right click on the pic and then click on "save picture as..." and then save it to my documents to post at a later time as an attachment here. ( I did this when coping the pic of Ambers Christening gown from e-bay that I was buying a year ago.) Is this okay????

Thanks Sammie!

Guess it comes down to one is a little white lie and the other is just a lie!

Well, I posted a picture from ebay the other night for a cat tree I was buying. So I guess I am a Whovenile delinquent! (That's from the Grinch... don't wanna steal anything from him!)

yes, that is okay as far has bandwidth. As far as copywrite you should put a link to the person that the pic belongs to (the ebay auction)

OK, so now I guess I'm being a little paranoid, but I don't want to use up anyone's bandwidth...If you get a smilie from a site which states "To use the smilie, right-click on the smilie, copy the URL and post it in your message", they know you are using up some of their bandwidth, correct? And you don't have to download it?

Whoa.....

Ok, I understand whats going on here and it concerns me greatly. You mentioned that you can block Right-clicking pictures ? How ? I run a website for my business, and I don't want people stealing my pics. I have them copyrighted, but nobody takes copyright laws seriously enough on the web.

Right click blocking is only semi-effective. Many users would know how to bypass that. I don't like the right-click script as I often just want to open a link in a new window using the right click and it stops you from doing that as well. Also, some webmasters put insulting messages on the right click pop-up when all I wanted was to open a window in a new page...

Anyway, there is one surefire way to stop people from linking to your images and stealing your bandwidth and that's done through manipulating the apachee server using as htaccess file. It's pretty complicated stuff and I won't go into it here - webmasters should visit www.sitepointforums.com and check the serve configuration forum there.

That said, Val is right and even if your images are not protected by htaccess, people should not be linking to them without your permission. I found out once that another forum on the net was using our similies by linking to them - I asked them to stop and they did. Some websites don't mind remote linking (like smilie website you mentioned Christy) and they tell you to do that. Smilies are small so maybe they don't mind losing the bandwidth - I don't know.

And copying an image and using it just because it's on the web is not only unethical it's also illegal. We use pictures by our users for the cards and the Meowhoo wallpapers but we either ask permission directly of we have it stated on the website clearly. I hate it when people steal my work. If it's a personal or non-for-profit site and they give credit for the image and a link back than I don't mind (I get people asking for permission to do that and I always say yes under those terms). Otherwise - I will chase them dowm until they stop. Mary Anne here can tell you about our latest fight against a website that simply copied the forums!

Here is the story:

While Anne was checking our links page, she ran across a website called Mokado.com and she started looking around and found an exact copy of our forums! Not only the design, but the copy word for word! Deb25 did some detective work and found out the website was in Russia and the server in England. I sent a letter to the server and Anne sent a letter to the person behind the website that was a bit stern in tone informing the person that her illegal activity was called stealing and it was a crime.

Turns out (or so we were told) that the woman paid someone to design a website for her and this is what he did, and charged her dearly for it. She took it down that day, and it no longer exists. It was a definite eye-opener it was and whoever DID do it, should be ashamed! But probably isn't.

This is really an eye opener for me, I had no idea by posting pictures that it wasnt allowed.

Thanks Princess Purr for bringing up the subject and to everyone else for making it clear.

I am sorry that it happened with the site design being stolen.

Oh yeah! I had a chance to see Mokado.com before it went down and was stunned... To see it copied word for word was such a shocker.... A real slap in the head with "Reality" -- some nerve!

I am glad the owner of that site cooperated with you guys and took it all down. Way to go! Maryanne, Deb25 and Anne!!

wow! that is really sad that someone would steal a whole board! I think there is just too much of a laxed feeling about the web. There are really people sitting behind those computers typing, posting, and putting alot of work into there sites. It hurts when people just take things with no concerns.

I know when I was building our MaskInfusion website, I got graphics and backgrounds only from places that specifically said they were free to use. I am going to be re-doing the site soon, since we're changing webhosting companies, and I do want to add a Links page, including the sites I got free graphics from so that they get credit.

Right Click is an easy thing to conquer for my computer. I just press Shift & Control at the same time when it comes up saying I can't right click and it just saves the picture into my directory maybe somebody installed some hacker thing on my comp
. I don't do it of course coz it's stealing.

UhHuh Anne had already stated what I said. I can bypass Right Clicking.

I also agree with this. I have visited
Val's! sites and when I right click it comes up saying ... rah rah rah and all I wanted to do was open a new window. No offence Val!

Sam, I hope you understand now what I am going to telling you. #1 I asked and they told me it was alright. (Except for an ebay picture) #2 All I did was ask you not to talk down to me, especially in the public forum. And basically I didn't need a mommy since I'm almost 45 and you're 13.And I even did it in a very nice way, also stating at the same time that I thought you were a good kid but I didn't feel I was doing you justice if I sat back and said nothing but rather stay angry about it. So since you insist on doing this publicly and my explaination fell on deaf ears, I guess what I attempted to say nicely went over your head.
