I didn't know if all of your guys knew this, but when you go to a site and click properties on a picture, and copy the url and then post a pic that way you are actually stealing the persons bandwidth. People normally have to pay for bandwidth for there websites after they go over a certain amount. If you want to post a pic you should save it and then upload it to your server or attach it unless you have permission from the sites owner to use there bandwidth.

I just noticed on another thread where someone said they did that to put up a pic. That is kinda a big no no in the online world. That is why I no longer have blinkie on my site, and I have right clicking blocked, people where direct linking and eating up all my bandwidth.

I thought that is what was suggested for pics on here. Like from imagestation.

The difference with Image Station and like websites is that they offer free photo hosting, it's a service that they offer. What Val is talking about is more for privately owned websites.

Wow, thanks for pointing that out, Val. And thanks for clarifying, Heidi. I was feeling guilty for using imagestation for a minute there! Imagestation is the only thing I've used to remote-link. I do use right-click to open links in a new window because of my slow dial-up service. I had wondered why some sites didn't allow right-clicking - I had to click the link, wait for the page to load, go back again, etc. But now I know they're protecting their bandwidth, and can't blame them for that!

with imagestation you have permission (like hedi side
) that is what sites like that are there for. But lets say ebay listings, or something from my site, or pics of an animal on petfinder, that would be eating up the persons bandwidth because everytime someone views that pic it draws off there bandwidth.

Right and the person can also track down where that draw is coming from and land here. Early this year I picked up a cute photo off a website and brought it here to show everyone. It was a hamster baby inside a walnut shell. The owner suddenly had all this increased activity on her website and she traced it back here and wrote Anne a furious letter about stealing not only her photograph (her original work) but also about the bandwidth stealing. Needless to say, I didn't know at the time, but I do now and therefore I don't post other pictures from other websites here anymore.

On a curious note, after a few heated emails back and forth between me and the photog, she and I are now dear cyber friends and she is also my mentor in writing- go figure! LOL

But Val is right, and Val a lot of people just don't know this, so thank you for bringing it to their attention.

Oi. come on now people, this is the internet.. this is the consequences you get for having pictures up on the web imo. If you dont have a notice on your website that clearly says "do not steal my pictures" or have non-right clicking enabled, then its their problem.

everything on the internet is by law copywritted by the person that posted it. I have researched this because people were stealing my copywrited items. Stealing bandwidth is no different then stealing money. Just because it is the internet is not a good reason. When you go to someones website you should not treat it any different that going into someones house. if you want to borrow something ask the owner first.

The last time someone stole bandwidth from me—I changed the graphic to something REALLY embarrassing so that it would show up in their posts or where ever they were using it… :eek:pposite: -- it wasn't pretty, either - LOL!!

just to add, since zoey takes such good pics I would think this issue would concern you some. If people linked her pics off of your site with out asking they would take all your bandwidth. Or How would you feel if you saw someone else claiming her as there cat. Or if someone sold pics of her as backgrounds or made cards using her pics.

This is the risk I take by having her on the internet. If that happened I'd deal with it when the time came.

If I stated on my website DO NOT STEAL MY PICTURES.. ya then I'd be pissed off.. but I just dont see how you could compare linking a pic from a website the same as stealing money. THAT PERSON takes the risk by putting their pictures up on the web.

because it comes down to money. I only have so much bandwidth per month with my site and after I go over that amount i have to shut the site down OR pay for more bandwidth. Why should I have to pay for people to use my pics that I don't want them taking in the first place. I do have a right click block on mysite but some people know how to get around that. It is not fair to the site owner and it is one of those internet laws that no one seems to care about or follow.

hmmm I was told by a site I happened to link from that the problem was the opposite and it's illegal to download it to your computer and then upload it or use it somewhere else. If it is the case to not link, then every time you use a smiley from another site (other then our list here) you're stealing that bandwidth. And everytime you link pictures from imagestation or another site.

One recent example of this is music. It's been determined illegal to download it to your computer if you don't pay for it. However, if you link to it and listen to it from your computer it is not necessarily illegal. That's what all the halabalue is about now. And they are threatening to charge people who download. So who knows! Guess I'll have to do some more poking around!

I always make sure when I take graphics from a site, like my smilies or the bumper sticker below, to look for instructions. Most sites say right click, copy url and paste into message. If it says that, I do it without a second thought.

Downloading someone else's photos, and posting them on your own imagestation site would also be considered an infringement of copyright, I would expect. I would just say that the solution is to stay away from anyone else's material.

right but if a site tells you to do it, they are GIVING you permission. You shouldn't take things off peoples sites unless they say you can.
