I think my cat has seperation anxiety

Hi Forum,

To make a long story, a bit shorter.

I have a male cat that I adopted as a kitten about 3 years ago. I was single at the time, I started dating my now wife and she would spend alot of time over, and having two cats herself was a cat lover and showered him with attention which he adored.

We moved in together and he quickly became the dominator of her time and attention, if one of the other two cats is laying on her he will get very jealous and annoy the other cats to the point they leave.

We have been living together for about 3 years now and within the last year we have noticed something really strange.

When we come home there are socks and washclothes, laying on the floor infront of the bathroom door.

We didn't know who was doing it untill I just caught the lil guy red handed. I am working from home today and shortly after my wife left for work, he started meowing quite loudly, and went downstairs, grabbed a sock off the dryer, ran up with it meowing and dropped it infront of the bathroom door, this continued for about 4 more pairs of socks then he went to sleep on her pillow.

He has never done this when she is home, its only when shes gone. I find it signifigant that he dops them infront of the bathroom door as that is one of his favorite spots, when he hears her walk into the bathroom he comes running from any spot in the house to go see her and get petted.

Any insight?

It doesn’t sound like separation anxiety to me, but it does sound like he’s bringing her “presents.â€

It’s the same behavior that has cats bringing their people their “kills†as a sign of respect and to get attention. Chances are, since she showers him with attention, he’s returning the favor.

For what it’s worth, I have a “sock hunter†too. She finds a sock (sometimes from in my drawer) and brings it over to my side of the bed meowing until (if I’m home) I tell her “Thank you for the socks.†I’ve woken up Freya curled up at my side snoozing and a half dozen socks on the floor on my side of the bed.
