Some of you may know that I have been involved in pushing for positive change at a local county animal control. And that the director there was old- school catch-n-kill and very difficult to deal with. She was forced to come along with changes by the board of commissioners.

Well, today I found out that the board fired her. That position is being filled temporarily by the former president of the local Humane Society.

Don't know what is going to happen going forward, but all of us involved see the removal of this woman - who was truly an obstacle to change and much worse - as a good sign.

You cannot make progress when dealing with a brick wall - and sounds like dealing with her was like dealing with a brick wall! I'm happy to hear she's gone, & hope progress can be made to save lives!

That's wonderful news to hear! There are so many no-kill shelters making it, that there is no reason for the other point of view.

These are trying times, and I can't say I know of any no-kill shelters exactly thriving. But with the help of volunteers, and a lot of creative fund raising, no-kill shelters are doing their job.

Great!

Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for a lot of positive change! The director of our local shelter recently stepped down and was replaced by someone much more open as well. When I was in the shelter on the weekend, the employees were telling me how the animals are now FINALLY getting the proper vet care they need instead of being euthanized, and that the new director doesn't mind money being spent for the good of the animals.

My shelter kills every Wednesday. From January to may they killed 60, mostly cats.they allow $10,000 per year for our shelter is all.
We have so many strays it is becoming an epidemic and I have no idea what to do any ideas or help?Right now I am feeding 3-4 strays and now have 3 indoor cats because of it(as well as a Lab) if there are any organizations that help to rehome please let me know as at least of these is tame enough to find a good home right now(long haired Callie)and If I could get Freckles(buddy) to go in a carrier without flipping out he is petable and loving right now and I am willing to tame the torty if I can find them homes I cannot afford to fix them all we have no low cost clinics around here and no TNR programs. Most of my threads go unanswered so please if any info let me know Thank you

Marah, have you conducted a phone and/or e-mail campaign to rescues/shelters in your area? Are you willing to drive them any distance? Contact organizations as far away as you'd be able to get the kitties. If you have trouble with using carriers, most of us use traps if it comes to that. Do the local shelters or vets in your area have them available for rent/loan? Most places do. You can find them at http://www.petfinder.com.

Have you already requested the Feral Friends list from Alley Cat Allies? No one in your area? http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=444

Have you joined the Best Friends No More Homeless Pets network - and posted about this on the local (Indiana) forum? http://www.bestfriends.org/nomorehom...ts/thenetwork/

Have you created flyers/one-page posters to stick up all around town and to include at the local vet offices (most have "For adoption" books or posterboards where you can take up fliers)? The Best Friends Resource Library may help you: http://www.bestfriends.org/nomorehom...sourcelibrary/

And the Neuter Scooter is a Mobile low-cost clinic in Indiana. https://www296.safesecureweb.com/ip7...clinicstate=IN I'd contact them to see if they'll be some place you can get to. The closest low-cost clinic to where we live is about an hour drive away, so you may have to be more flexible in your definition of "around here."

The other thing to do is to talk to your vet! You may find they're willing to do it at cost if they understand why and you're not talking about 40 cats.

The shelter here is an uncaring cruel place many of us have tried to get them to change their policies but they are callous and shut us down they don't even take the time to advertise on petfinder or anything because they don't keep them long enough.I have talked to the vets as well and that is a no go, they are all about money
I will however investigate and call the places that you listed. If you guys start up a rescue of some kind PLMK. Yes I would be willing to transport them and I think I can borrow a live trap. I did check out the neuter scooter for Indiana at the time it didn't come anywhere close to here(like 100miles away) but I will check again
Yes I did make flyers list on Petfinder/ Ebay classified pets/craigslist/but I will do some more research since you gave me some more links to go to
Thanks very much and any more info please feel free to pass it to me! I will get busy now!

Marah, when we first encountered cats, no shelters even returned our phone calls. We had to learn how to do it all ourselves. We borrowed a trap from the vet, worked out a deal on the cost (until we could afford our own trap and then would take them to the low cost spay/neuter clinic). But we went out of our way to make friends with everyone at the vets' offices around here - always brought in cookies and treats we made for them. The staff and vet techs would help us out, helping to foster the kitties, and helping to find homes for the kitties.

When the shelters are full or aren't nice, you just have to get creative and utilize as many people and resources as you can, do your best to network, be willing to travel to do what you need to do, and print out posters of the kitties that need homes and plaster them everywhere. We've never adopted out a cat that we listed somewhere on the internet, it was always local, either by word of mouth or in response to one of the posters we had up.

P.S. You mentioned you don't get many replies to your posts. I don't know about your others, but for something like this, you're likely to get more attention for it if you start a new thread rather than posting about a new subject within someone else's thread.
