I used to feed my boys both wet and dry, and they both seemed to tolerate it fine. Due to my work schedule, I had switched to just dry. Now when I try give my younger cat (who is about 4-5 years old) canned food, he vomits. I've tried very small amounts of a few different canned foods, and every time he vomits repeatedly within a minute or two of consuming the food. Any idea what could cause this? I'd love to feed more canned, at least on occasion, since my other cat is a senior.

List the foods. There may be something in them he can't handle.

Any possibility that for now you could at least give the senior cat wet food?

They've been on several different dry foods and are currently on Royal Canin Mature 27. Previous dry foods have included California Natural Chicken & Rice, Natural Balance Duck and Pea, Royal Canin Adult, Purina Naturals, and Acana. Some of the switching has been due my older cat vomiting frequently, but we haven't been able to tie his vomiting to any particular food. He is on Zantac to help calm his stomach.

When they both at canned food before, they primarily had Wellness (chicken and turkey mainly) and Natural Balance (several flavors, including the duck and pea). On the couple of occasions when I've tried a little bit of canned food in the past six months, it was a Fancy Feast pate (can't remember what flavor), another can of something (can't remember which), and most recently a bit of Natural Balance Venison and Pea.

My older cat does get a bit of canned food when my roommate feeds it to his cats. My older one occasionally gets Wildside salmon treats, but the younger one doesn't eat treats.

Also, the dry is always available--they have a single dry food bowl, and I put in a cup about twice a day (sometimes a little less if they haven't eaten as much).

Okay, I'll try one of those. It's so weird that the vomiting is so immediate and that he will typically vomit four times in a row.

I'll try that too when I get some tonight. I'll report back after the trial.

Interesting thought. I have a close friend who says her cat consistently throws up after eating canned, no matter what the type. Like cloud_shade, she's at a loss. I may tell her about this thread!

This a good thread for me as well because Imhotep does the exact same thing. I have tried him with numerous wet foods and he vomits everytime.

I'm wondering if they are eating too fast, these cats who vomit canned food, and that's why.

Have you tried just giving them a tiny bit at a time? Like a level teaspoon at a time? Then waiting and seeing for 10 minutes or so. If it stays down, I'd give the same amount again. Repeat.

I have tried that, without success. Even with just a teaspoon-sized amount, he still vomits at least a couple of times in a row.

So far so good! I bought a can of Eagle Pack, gave him a small amount and added a good amount of water so it's soupy. I also let him lick at it for a minute and then distract him so he's not gobbling it all down at once. So far, no vomiting! I'll try it with a different flavor tonight (I have a bunch of wet food from before still on my shelves, and I'd love to use it if I can). I'm thinking maybe the water rather than the food itself is what's making the difference, but we'll have to see.

Be sure to pick up the dry food at least 30 mins before they get wet food & don't give it to them for 30 mins after wet food. That's what would trigger my Eden to puke - eating dry food too soon around eating wet food.

Hello,

I have heard of this issue from several people in the past. Here is what I have learned and may very well work.

First, try Nature's Variety, "Instinct" for cats. Take a very small portion, add a little water or low sodium chicken broth and microwave for 8 seconds. Mix it all together and serve. Switching from brand to brand quickly will cause digestive issues in many cats.

Secondly, pay a visit to your vet. Leave the cat at home and just spend five or so minutes describing the issue. He/She may have a specific wet food to try or it could be the sign of something more serious, let us hope this is not the case!

Lastly, when do you serve the wet food? If you only have tried one time of day, serve it at the opposite time of day. Also, why did you stop giving your cat wet?

I hope that these ideas resolve the problem.
