hey guys,

first post here.

I just had my two male cats neutered today. We just noticed that one of them has one eye dilated & not the other eye. I'm thinking that this may be a reaction to the anestesia, but it still has me worried.

has anyone had any experience with this, particularly after surgery?

we're calling the vet first hing in the morning but any help would be great, my wife is freaking out.

I don't believe that's normal, but anesthesia can have some strange side effects. It might be a good idea to call the emergency vet to ask about it. . .calling is free, and if it's normal they can set your mind at rest. Do let us know how it turns out.

How is he acting otherwise?

just thought about this, it's not that one eye is dilated, it;s that the other isn't.

it's night here & we have low light conditions in the house, so I think the dilated pupil is OK, but I think that the other one should also be dilated, but it is not.

It does constrict a little more when I shine a light in his eye.

Strange that it happened after surgery.

This may not be relevant, but my cat once had a pupil that would not dilate while the other one would. She had a deep ear infection, and I seem to recall mention of the term Horner's syndrome - I think that the ear infection was so deep that it affected a nerve or something leading to this issue with the eye.

Well, it doesn't sound like an emergency. Like I said, anesthetic can do some weird stuff. If his eyes are still like that tomorrow, though, definitely call your vet to ask about it. That should be long enough for the drugs to be mostly out of his system.

update, Lears (named him that cause when I found him he was all legs & ears) was OK. I've been checking his eye throughout the day & it seems normal & he is acting very normal too. as loving as ever, purring up a storm.

Yay that he's better...but I know how scary it can be not knowing if something is 'unusual but not worrisome' or 'gosh, honey, warm up the car we're on the way to the ER vet'.

In my limited experience, I've found that both vets and ER vets are more than good with phone calls (yep, called my vet ten minutes after I got my boy home from his first dental - they had told me he'd be groggy, but I didn't realize he'd be walking like a drunken sailor). The vet was very kind, came to the phone, and told me what signs to watch for and more or less when to panic.

If your boy isn't 98% normal tomorrow morning, I'd give the vet a call just to make sure. And, just a suggestion - if you don't already know where your ER vet is, maybe find out which one your vet's practice uses and how exactly to get there. I did a dry run one Sunday afternoon and was very happy I did - nothing more fun that driving with a sick cat late at night when you're not quite sure where you're going (yes, I'm the last person in the US without a smart phone).

Good luck.

thanks

yeah I'll make a new thread with some pics of the guys.

Funny, I never thought I'd be posting on a cat forum, being that I am what many would consider a "dog person" lol.

I've had dogs my whole life, never really liked cats until a few years back. One big black cat showed up at my mother house when we moved in with her inbetween houses. Named him "Black Brotha", but he wasn't really ours, he'd come & go as he pleased.

Then we got this house & another black cat shows up, Petrolio is what we named him. He infiltraded our family & within 3 weeks it was like he had been with us 3 years. He was with us for 4 yrs & passed this past Feb.

In June I found these 2 little guys by the side of the road one night while I was working. They were about 7 weeks old & very ugly. Skinny, nappy, with mites & scabbies. I took them home hoping to find a good home for atleast one of them, but nobody wanted a black cat or two. So now they are part of the family.

I guess I got a thing for black cats & they have a thing for me.

Sure seems that way! I'm glad these black cats have been following you around and Choosing you!

I'm so sorry for your loss of your beloved Petrolio. Clearly he didn't want you to be deprived of your black cat lovin for too long, so he sent you those babies.

Congratulations on the rescue, and being Chosen. Can't wait to meet them!

yeah, Petro's death hit us pretty hard. Funny thing though, one of the guys that I picked up, Choripan is just like Petro.

Spooky almost how much he looks & behaves like Petrolio. My wife even somtimes calls him Petro by mistake.

I made a thread in the new cats on the block forum introducing ourselves & some pics.
