Having two small children, I have learned that when you are a new mom you want to rush your kids to the doctor at the first sign of a sniffle, and then as you get more comfortable, you learn when its okay to wait it out with them. I feel like I am in new mom stage with my cats and don't know if I should rush to the vet or wait it out. When is it okay to wait and see if their systems will defeat something on their own, and what signs would say to get them to the vet asap?

My two longhaired cats Femmy and Falkor got fixed at the low cost clinic last Wednesday. (I got a new shelter cat Tuesday and integrated him fully into the family around Saturday) Sunday, Femmy started sneezing and coughing some, this has continued quite a bit with some lethargy (mainly just wanting to be around someone constantly) and not so much eating or drinking. Falkor started sneezing and eyes watering yesterday as well.

Though I think they didn't eat so much a couple of days prior, yesterday they ate and drank well. They look a little rough, but I have read that often times URI's are viral and really antibiotics don't help with viral infections. If it were my kids, I would wait it out unless they had a fever that persisted for more than two days.

I don't know how to check for a fever in cats.

I don't have pet insurance, so it will be pricey to take them into a vet. I would hate to go and have the vet say that it was viral and had to wait it out, yet would also be really upset if I didn't take them when I should have.

They are sick for sure, but they are still eating and drinking (at least yesterday they were).

My other cat from the shelter seems fine, though I am sure he could catch it as well.

What should I do?

It is often common for stress to bring on URIs. As long as they continue to eat, drink, and use the box, you can wait. However, if they get any worse, then they need to go to the vet. You might call and explain the situation. The vet might ask to bring the sickest one in and then give meds for all. It just depends on the vet.
