How to stop cat from tipping over cups?

Thread Starter
My male neutered cat is fascinated by water and ice. If a cup or glass is in the living room he will stick his paw in it to tip it over even if I am sitting right next to him. How do I discourage this behavior? Yelling no and spraying with water have no effect. (He doesn't mind water) I have tried giving him ice to play with in the kitchen but he quickly loses interest. Any other suggestions?

Don't leave any glasses unattended. All of us cat owners have this problem.
Your other alternative is to drink out of a reusable water bottle (stainless steel one if you want to make sure it can be sanitized) or cups with wide bases and lids (like a large plastic mug).

I switched to cups with lids the day that one of mine spilled a glass of ice water on my head while I was sleeping. Some cats are simply fascinated with cups with water in them and they don't stop drinking/playing with them, even when you redirect them to other water sources.

Btw, I tried things like putting ice cubes in their water bowls to redirect them away from mine. All it did was to make them more fascinated with my ice water and they came to my glass more frequently once they realized how much fun it was.

We use thermal cups with lids for all drinks. No more "glasses" in this house.

I had that happen years ago. I had left half a glass of water on the night stand, in a very heavy glass, and woke up to it hitting me in the head.

Max and Sophie would only drink water from a glass on my nightstand. I got a short glass with a large base for them. (picture below)

Water bottles for me. I haven't used a glass at home for years, LOL. It's a common cat owner problem. Just the way kitties are, I guess!

I am Loving this wonderful Information We love our Kitty cat but everytime she sees a cup or even if I hide the cup some how she finds it and tips it over....! She has tipped a glass of water over our heads in the middle of the night.... I was one unhappy person..... I have tried yelling at her she stops for a second and meows at me... I spray her with the water bottle she runs when she sees it but still continues to do it?? I am not sure what to do... I am so happy to hear I am not the only one dealing with this!

We use water bottles here. All I drink is water, I have this one- And it will keep ICE and water ice cold for over 24 hours:

Anyway, its just about catering. Change your things to keep the cats happy-

PS.. SMokie loves ice & water too..

Funny you posted this b/c I forgot to empty my water cup on my night stand and I came home and it was all over the hardwood floor as usual! The culprit is my calico (A 6lb terror) LOL  She knows I cant yell at her and I swear she thinks its funny! Its my fault b/c I've seen her do it 100 times and I still forget to empty it! Hehe!

I make sure I don't leave a glass unattended. Gus love to dip his paw in what ever you happen to be drinking. He rarely spills, but I don't like sharing with him.

It's funny how our cats can be so quirky, and some things are just a "cat thing" LOL

Get one or more heavy glass or ceramic beer steins. These are almost impossible to knock over.

You can set out glasses with water specifically for your cat (like on the coffee table or under chairs.)

When the cat messes with your drink, redirect the cat over to his/her glass.
