Should Bill Maher be fired?

Bill on British names

He goes on to explain his point, a little, and I agree with him. He has since expanded them a little when they were called into question. I think he didn't make his whole thought clear, but keep in mind he wrote a book named "Religulous," which criticizes all religion.

Bill Maher with Wolf Blitzer

Here is a longer explanation of what he's talking about. He has very good points.

Note: In this monologue, Bill uses a few words that are not suitable for children, probably. They go by quickly, but keep in mind this was broadcast on cable TV (HBO), where Bill's show is telecast.

I don't think he should be fired, I love Bill Maher, watch every one of his shows!! The difference between him and Juan Williams is that Bill Maher is a comedian. Which means he can say anything and not be taken seriously.

As far as what he's talking about, I don't agree with him although I do agree that he has good points.
I think he is just generalizing. The problem isn't Islam, and it's not true that every single Muslim is a fundamentalist. He says that Muslims take their religion too seriously, well the Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, probably do. It's because of the way their culture influences their beliefs, not because of Islam. But I know that Muslims in Turkey, Bosnia, Albania, live in a countries whose government is just like most European democracies, and are not all that different from other Westerners.

And I am saying this from experience, because having been to Istanbul, it is so not different from any western city, even though the official religion of the country is Islam. And having lived in Bulgaria in a city where 20% of the population is Turkish, therefore Muslim, I've seen that these people do take their religion seriously, it's not as though they've abandoned it, but yet they are in no way more primitive than Christians. The majority of them fast for Ramadan, compared to the Christian population much fewer of the Christians fast for lent or observe most of the traditions. In Bulgaria there are lots of Christians who say Turkish people need to go back to Turkey, and treat them similarly as how Mexicans are treated in the US. I just don't subscribe to that, maybe because having grown up in the US has taught me to be more open and comfortable with diversity and tolerance.

Anyway there have been times in my life when I've felt exactly as what Bill Maher is saying! I was so sure Islam was a dangerous religion. But, now I just think the issue is much deeper than just Islam. It's these theocracies' culture, not their religion that makes them such a threat that Bill Maher talks about.

Fired from what exactly? You're aware that Real Time is his show, right? He's one of the producers. This isn't a news show on a channel like Fox or MSNBC. It's Bill's show that HBO airs. (though has some say in)

HBO could choose to stop airing the show, but they couldn't fire him from the show.

"Fired from what?"

It was a joke. It was enough of a joke that it came up in the first two videos. Bill got the joke the first time, and told it the second.

Why anyone would spend time with Bill Maher is beyond me. After listening to his show for 60 seconds years ago I decided he's the type of person I would avoid if I ever met him in real life.

Maybe so (I find him really annoying, generally), but you should listen to the clips I linked to. You might find a little bit of sympathy for him!

I'm confused, was this a hot topic? Did he finally say something that went to far and hiscontract was in question?

No, but he made some statements that caused a kerfuffle here and there. I personally found his remarks completely consistent with the stand he has always taken about religion influencing government, but the manner in which he stated it sounded a little like Juan Williams' comments. Enough so that almost everywhere it has been discussed, it has been jokingly said that had he worked for NPR, he would have been fired.
