Some suggestions for the next Congress

Keeping in mind John Adams' statement that "one useless man is a shame, two useless men are a law firm, and three or more useless men are a congress," I have some modest suggestions.

1. Move Daylight Saving Time back at least to the old dates. The current dates were set as a temporary test to see if they saved energy. A number of studies show just the opposite is true, so we need to go back.

2. A Constitutional Amendment: "Congress shall pass no bill exempting itself from any other law which remains in effect on the people, nor shall it pass any bill from which it exempts itself."

What are your ideas?

1. Term limits - 2 terms for Senators, 4 terms for Representatives.

2. Reinstate the original way Senators were selected - not by popular vote, but by selection of the State Legislature. Senators are supposed to represent the State, and representatives represent the people. Put it back the way it is supposed to be. Then people like Barbara Boxer wouldn't be a Senator for 26 years.

3. No bill can be more than 20 pages in length, and may not contain any provision that does not directly relate to the original intention of the bill. In other words, no pork additives.

4. Allow the President line veto power.

5. No pay raises for incumbents, and pay should be tied to economic indicators, and no pay until a budget is passed.

I could probably think of a few more, but this is good for starters.

Great ideas!

My #1 fav suggestion: term limits

The Supreme Court has already said the line item veto is unconstitutional, when Bill Clinton got it and tried to use it. No luck there, I'm afraid.

Universal term limits would also be unconstitutional and would require a constitutional amendment (fat chance!). That would be putting a new requirement on running for office, which is not allowable (for example, you could not require a congressman to be a Christian or white or whatever).

Outline the exact replacement plan they have prepared for "repeal and replace"...after all, it's what they ran on.

Outline exactly how they intend to stop the Park51 development in NYC...after all, it's what they ran on.

I'd add more once they get those laid out.

Actually, I didn't hear a single congressman or senator run on stopping the Muslim Cultural Center. I don't see how they could, even if they wanted to. How could they preach "states' rights" AND plan on interfering in that whole mess?

Not that hypocrisy is impossible in any politician, mind you...

Why would term limits be unconstitutional? I mean congress would have to vote it for themselves, and I don't see that happening, but I also don't see anything in the Constitution that would prohibit terms limits.

No keeping current health care plan upon leaving the employment of the US citizens unless they pay out of pocket for it. (After all, regular US citizens don't get to keep their health care upon leaving employment unless they pay for it.)

Actually, several mentioned it early in their campaigns, quite a few of whom won. Better known Republicans stumping for them mentioned it often. As it was during the campaigns, it was part of them. Just because they got quiet about it in the last month makes no difference. They said it, and that's that! After all '57 states' still pops up, in fact just very recently.

I want to know how they intend to stop it.

I would suggest they stop the policy of "us" vs. "them" and work together to get this country moving again. Stop making policies that are only good for the wealthiest 2% and try to figure out what's good for the rest of the us - even if its not popular with a portion of the country. The biggest thing I would like them to do is stop lying, distorting, and scaring people. Who needs terrorist when we have politicians.
