My cat has started pooping on the carpet

Hi, we adopted a declawed, adult cat (approx 8 yrs old) last April. He meows incessantly to go outside, and we let him out on our deck where he spends a lot of time. About two weeks ago, he pooped on the carpet in the living room when a friend was staying with us. Since then he has pooped about five times in the same place. We've sprayed the carpet with Keep Off and it doesn't make any difference. Why would he suddenly start doing this. How can we make him stop?

First thing you need to do is see a vet. It's unusual for an adult cat to suddenly start going outside of the box and is usually indicative of a health problem, not a behavior problem. You'll be spinning your wheels if you try to treat this as a behavior problem and it's really a medical problem.

Also, are you cleaning the spots with an enzyme cleaner? What litter are you using? How many litter boxes do you have? covered or uncovered?
