Question about Maine Coons

Thread Starter
I think my kitten Midnight might actually be a full Maine Coon. I don't know how to find that out for sure. I took him to the vet, and she said "Wow is that a Maine Coon?" I just said "No just a long hair tabby". I know my last vet thought my cat Lynxx might have some Maine Coon in him, but we know he's a tabby.

The thing that does make me question whether Midnight is a real Maine Coon, is I saw pictures online of them. He has the same eyes, his face is the same shape, his paws are bigger than him. When Lynxx was a kitten his paws were huge to, but Midnight's are really huge. His tail is getting longer and fluffier. His fur feels different than Lynxx's.

The other thing that makes me question Midnight is my mother's friend at work found him outside her house at 3 weeks old. She knew we were looking for a kitten because of Luna. She told my mother, and we took him. Now she lives on a farm. The people around her live on farms, and are farmers.

About a week after we got Midnight, my mother's friend told us he came from a neighboring farm. The farmers were asking everyone if they found any kittens. They woke up 1 morning found the mother and kittens gone. The mother came back. They really wanted those 4 kittens, but they said they were happy knowing Midnight came to a good home.

Well what we were thinking is farmers aren't going to go door to door looking for their barn kittens right? My grandparents live next to farmers, and they don't even know their barn cats.

Anyway we think they kept bothering the mother and kittens, and the mother moved the kittens and Midnight got lost while moving. Well if those farmers had Maine Coons they planned on selling, or at least 1/2 Maine Coons they must have showed people the kittens, made the mother nervous enough to relocate.

Like I said farmers aren't going to go door to door endlessly searching for barn kittens, but they would if they had pure bred kittens right? so is it possible Midnight is a Maine Coon? He looks so much like them that it's incredible.

Or is this just wishful thinking on my part, considering I always wanted a Maine Coon?

Sorry this was so long, I just wanted to know if it was possible?

Like I said in your Van thread - its very doubtful your cats have any purebred in them, even if they look or act like one. There are so many MC look a likes out there, that everyone thinks if they have a long hair cat (especially a tabby) its a MC or has MC in the background.

Breeders have taken years to breed a cat that is to the written standard and have documented the lines, so they have a purebred cats. Without a pedigree/registration papers on either of your cats, you cannot say they are a breed.

Vets don't know much about breeds - believe me!

I have very hard time believing that a farmer would be breeding pure bred or even half breed Maine Coons, specially in this case. Not a single reputable breeder let their cats outside unsupervised, and a pregnant queen? Never. If the kitten was 3 weeks old when he was found (and you suspect the mommy was stressed because of visitors and moved the kittens), that raises another flag: if the farmer was a breeder, he/she wouldn't have let random people to come and see the kittens that early. And I'm quite sure the breeder would have wanted the kitten back (because they need their mommy atleast until they are 12 weeks old) and said he is a Maine Coon, they would have needed to register him. Breeders keep their queens in a safe place where they can't just move the kittens anywhere they want to, they need to be supervised, handled and socialized from the start, if you can't find/reach them, how are you going to do that?

Do you have any pics to show what he looks like? If there is a possibility of backyard breeding/kitten mill with half breed MCs I strongly suggest you test your cat for HCM.

It's quite easy, pedigree papers = purebred cat.

Did you know that Tabby is a coat pattern and not a breed? There are also different colour tabbies, so your kitty Lynxx would be a (colour) tabby, domestic long or short hair.

Ocicat wasn't even in my vets database of breeds, so we went through all the colours to load it all in - lucky there's only 12

Since Maine Coons were a naturally occurring breed, it is not unusual to find cats that look similarly to them, but do not have any actual Maine Coon(purebred) blood. In fact in New England they have what are called 'native Maine coons' which are Maine Coon like cats with no pedigree or history of pure breeding.

Most longhaired brown tabbies look very much like Maine Coons.
