On Saturday I opened up a new can 12oz Wellness Chicken. It had a big chuck of fat like stuff on top. It didn't smell bad, just different. Never had this problem with other cans of Wellness I have bought before, even from the same case. Sully was really hungry (he's always hungry) and ate some when I was looking batteries for my camera and he got runny stool from it. Luci and Sushi didn't touch it.

I emailed Wellness but didn't get a response other then an email saying they got my message. I'll be calling them today.

If you feed canned Wellness have you ever seen "fat" in the can like above?

I feed Wellness grain free. There is usually fat in the can, but it's not a big white lump, but instead it's at the sides of the meat and is all gooey and smells tasty. It's Wiggies favourite part! Was the lump of fat hard, possibly it could be rancid? I think it's telling that your cat got loose stools after eating it. Hope he's feeling better soon! It would be nice of Wellness to send you a coupon or something.

That doesn't look right. I had two spoiled cans of BG beef... it was loose and milky-looking and normally the pate is solid.

When in doubt, throw it out ... is my motto. Not worth it.

The pet store refunded me for those two spoiled cans and took the cans (w/ the inventory #s on them to report them to the maker.)

I serve Wellness - but in the 5.5oz cans - haven't had a problem - but will be sure and check extra for unwanted ingredients.

I'd take the stuff back - hopefully Wellness will be generous with the coupons for you!

Just fed my boys and took a good look at the food. The fat is clear and jelly-like, not hard and white like that at all.
Definitely tell the store about it as they should be aware they may be selling off food!

I got an emailed response:

Dear Kim:

Thank you for taking the time to write WellPet regarding your WellnessÂ[emoji]174[/emoji] Chicken canned cat food. At WellPet we are committed to providing the highest quality pet foods and treats available.

What you are seeing is called a broth layer. As the food is cooked in the can, the juices from the meat may be released. As the product cools the juices can become a gel like substance. This should be added back in at feeding since it does contain all the flavors from the meat.

However, your comments will be forwarded to our Quality Assurance Department. I assure you that we are taking your complaint very seriously. You are a valuable customer, and any dissatisfaction on your part indicates an opportunity for improvement on our part.

I would be happy to send coupons towards your next purchase of WellnessÂ[emoji]174[/emoji] canned cat food. We feel confident that you will be satisfied with the quality of these products.

Thanks again for contacting us.
I'm checked my other cans. The bad can says "05/2013" and my other cans say "04MAY13"

That was an interesting response - especially the "cooked in the cans" part, hmmm.

Glad that they're sending you some coupons.

I imagine that the amount of "broth layer" is a lot more than normal.

I'll be looking at my can dates - interesting that the dates are recorded in a different format.

When some of us looked into Canned and the cooking process roughly 50-75% of cat foods in cans are cooked in can....
