Family may face post ban after cat attacks postman

Oh my goodness, I have just read this in the sun, how ridiculous is this? Royal Mail will stop delivering mail to this house unless they keep their cat under control. The cat is not aggressive and was just playing.x

If the cat decided to bite next time, it could be serious. We used to have a grate over our kitchen window instead of a screen, and had to warn the mail carriers not to put the mail through the grate if the window was open, because Jamie, a kitten at the time, could and would bite if he felt threatened. We also had a "Beware of Cat" sign. I know from experience that a cat bite can be worse than a dog bite.

Yes I understand, I have been bitten badly too which required hospital treatment, the fact is this cat isn't aggressive and was just playing, it wa son msn news that the cat had never been aggressive in its life, perhaps they will have to have an outdoor letter box or something? x

Either an outdoor box (which we have, but which the carriers didn't always use) or a receptacle fitted inside the door to catch the mail falling through the slot should really be enough.

Speaking from experience with Rosie catching the post and newspaper at our old house.

Seriously, there is no need to put his hand through, because when i post christmas cards through the neighbours doors i don't stick my hand right in.

We get a free weekly newspaper delivered, and one particular day at our old house the boy delivering it "very" slowly pushed it though, but put his hand right in as well. Rosie used to hear it and go running, so she sat and waited as it came through, and the next thing she jumped up at his hand.

He never did it again after that though!

I think the postman is over reacting. It's not rocket science, he just doesn't have to stick his hand right in

Love the picture, yes I completely agree, come to think of it I don't think I ever see my posties hand sticking through the letter box when he posts my mail. It just seems a bit silly to me really.x

Why does everyone need to make a big deal out of this? Was it a slow week for the news? The post office should have simply called the family and said " You need to add a box on the inside or outside of your home to hold the mail. Our mailman doesn't want to come in contact with your cat. Once you've made the change we're resume delivering your mail to your home box." Simple.

I wouldn't want my mail freely dropping into the house anyways. 1) I have two cats that love to shred paper 2) There's always the possibility of Siri deciding to pee on it because it smells funny 3) You don't know who could sneak up to your door while you're away and drop something bad through.

I agree, thieves use letterboxes to put things through to fish keys out of the door lock, our letterboxes over here aren't safe. Honestly though, refusing to deliver mailx

It's within their right to do so. Most likely it's under one policy for dangerous animals and is more intended for dog issues. But everyone has a right to safely do their job - road, weather/environment, and people make delivering mail a bit risky as it is.

When we still lived at the old house our upstairs neighbour used to put his hands through the letterbox to play with Ernesto and Mimosa. When they would hear him coming down the stairs or walking through the front yard they would run for the door like crazy.

Ernesto and Mimosa always had a crate in front of the door because when they were kittens the window was to high for them to comfortably look through.

As they got bigger they were able to reach the letterbox when standing on their crate. In time they started to shove their paws through the letterbox when someone was at the door, I've seen them startle a few mailmen that way

Fortunately no one ever got scratched

Yes, I'm a mail carrier, and it is our prerogative to refuse delivery to a house if we think there's a hazard (doesn't have to be an animal--could be a dangerous porch or ice on the sidewalk, etc.). Mostly it's loose dogs who are the problem, but if the carrier is afraid of being injured by the cat, that's his right.

There's a cat on my route who does that, LOL. He's de-clawed () but I don't think I would get scratched even if he wasn't. He just jumps at the slot when I put the mail through, and then flings himself at the screen door as I'm leaving. . .it's startling but not dangerous. Crazy cat.

You're a cat person and understand that, though. It's just like how non dog people will sometimes be jumpy around dogs and completely misunderstand their body language.
It seems silly but maybe the mail carrier really doesn't know cats and is scared.

(I always try to make sure my mailman can make it through my yard in the winter, btw, even though he's terrible about picking up any outgoing mail - we gave up bothering with netflix because of that)
