That's awesome! The US has a black President, Brazil has a woman President, Australia has a woman Prime Minister... There's finally starting to get some equality!

Sooner or later a female head of state/government will become so normal that this type of reporting won't be necessary.

It usually isn't reported on. There are and have been several, but what happens election wise in say an African country, doesn't get that much attention.

I wouldn't say way left... She is a leftist... As it is the current govenment, the one which under Brazil has had the biggest growth in latest history. During the extremist right wing dictatorship in the 60-70s, she was imprisoned and tortured, as many who were against the government at the time.
She is from the same party as Lula, the current president, who is leaving the presidency with 78% approval rating after 8 years mandate. I am very happy, and actually surprised she won... Brasil has a history of being quite "machista"
