Prozac for Lynxx?

Does anyone else have a cat on Prozac?

Lynxx has had a very hard time adjusting to Luna and Midnight being here. He was an only cat for 9 years and has never showed an interest in other cats. The only reason we ever got another cat, is because we rescued Luna. That started it. Luna wants other cats, she wants to play and cuddle which Lynxx doesn't want. So that's why we got Midnight from my mother's friend who rescued him. Autumn came because my father fell in love with her when he first saw her. Which has turned out to be another nightmare but nothing to do with Lynxx.

Lynxx had stopped eating/drinking/using his box and pulling his fur out. He began wandering like he was lost. We had a vet that we took him to who had no problem charging us for the visits, but didn't do anything for Lynxx.

We've finally had it with them so we took him to a different vet today, she fixed a problem Autumn had last weekend, and seemed to know what she was doing, and actually seemed to care about the animals in her care. So we asked her if we could bring our other cats to her and she agreed.

She said stress is what's causing Lynxx's problem. Which we knew already. That he's so stressed out that even getting rid of the other cats wouldn't help Lynxx, the chemicals in his brain are off balance. She told us about Feliway which we bought after the appointment. Then she suggested trying Prozac, not forever just to get him back on track, get him back eating, and calm him down.

Does anyone on here have a similar situation? Did anyone give their cat Prozac? Did it work?

It would seem that I'm going through the same thing with Sasha since Tiggy came into the picture. The Vet wants to rule out kidney failure first; but if that's not it he said we could consider "Behavior modification" via medication...we'll see!

I have used Prozac for anxiety in a dog...It worked very well but that was 13 years ago and the OTC treatments like calming moments , Feliway , rescue remedy and others were not readily available... IMHO I would do some research and then re talk with the vet .. Prozac is not without ALOT of risk and side effects

It is usually recommended these kind of drugs (in my country Clomicalm is used most often) are used only as part of a behaviour modification plan. This medication does work by altering the brain chemistry so the cat does not react as strongly to the things it doesn't like, so you can work with the cat without reinforcing the cat's negative associations about certain things.
Just giving the medication and not doing anything about the cause of the problem will only suppress symptoms but not solve anything.

Prozac is used extra label for cats so I can't find any recommendations from the manufacturer. Clomicalm is also used off-label for cats but I have seen the information from the manufacturer regarding dogs, it says it should not be given long term due to side effects and only as part of a treatment plan by a behaviourist.

Still, a lot of vets do nothing but drug cats indefinitely. I know several cats that have been on Clomicalm for years because they sprayed and/or fought with other cats. Their problem behaviour will decrease a lot while on the medication (though not always entirely), but as soon as the owner stops giving the pills it will start again. Not surprising as the cat displays the behaviour because it is stressed about something that is still present.

By all means use the Prozac, it works. But also discuss with the vet if she can recommend steps towards a long term solution.

The original vet I went to did do a blood test and nothing was wrong, but that was at the beginning. This new vet did do another blood test to make sure nothing is wrong with any of his organs since he's been going on like this for so long. She is going to prescribe the Prozac, but she's also sending us to a cat behavorist at another hospital who might be able to help us in other ways.

I just knew so many people who's older cats got along great with the new kitten, with no problems. I thought since Lynxx is such a loving kind friendly cat, that he wouldn't mind having a "friend". My father always knew Lynxx was a loner, which is why we never got another cat, and if we didn't save Luna there wouldn't be any other cat.
