Calorically dense foods for ferals/strays

I am currently feeding a feral colony comprising of five to six adult cats and three females. I need to feed them very calorically dense foods for a few days before their TNR date (November 13/14). Do you have any recommendations--cheapest and the best quality. I know wet food is the best, but my gosh, that can get expensive.
Also, any recommendations for food post-surgery, continuing on into the winter months? I live in the Washington, DC area so it can get quite cold (in the 30s).
I have access to PetSmart and PetCo as well as the typical grocery store brands. I do not have access to Costco or similar warehouse stores.
Thanks.

The best quality at a low price would be Purina Naturals( big bag is 14-16 lbs for about 15$ at petsmart).. Remember oz for oz canned is roughly half the calories of dry

Thanks for TNRing and caring for these kitties!

We feed our ferals kitten food to bulk them up for Winter. I don't know protein content of Purina Naturals vs. a kitten food, but we like giving them as high a protein food as we can find. I imagine you'd want to do the same coming into the spay/neuter.

Do you have a trader joes in your area?

Here, in CA, a can of TJ's is $.59/can
it's what I was (am) feeding my (former) ferals. TJ's doesn't break the bank, but gives a reasonable nutritional value

Yes I do have access to Trader Joe's; thanks for the reminder.
And, thanks Sharky.

For the winter, I usually switch to Purina Kitten Chow for the extra calories. Normally the ferals get Cat Chow.

I second that - kitten food is higher in calories and has higher fat and protein levels....

Authority brand dry kitten food is not bad and not too outrageously expensive.
